PlayStation VR Price And Release Date Announced, Here Are The Details
Sony has finally announced the pricing and release date details for its virtual reality solution, with the PlayStation VR set to go on sale in October of 2016. The newly announced product, which has been in the news for a while but was suspiciously short of a release date or price, will cost gamers $399 when it goes on sale later this year.
During a short press event at the 2016 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Sony announced that the PlayStation VR will be one of the cheaper VR products on the market, so long as you already own the PlayStation 4 that is required in order to make it work. The Oculus Rift starts at $599 and Valve’s HTC Vive will set people back an eye-watering $799, and both of those solutions require powerful PCs in order to function. That alone makes the PlayStation VR a much more affordable proposition for those looking to get into the world of VR gaming. But as they say, things aren’t quite as simple as they first seem.
According to Sony, the relatively inexpensive PlayStation VR doesn’t come with any Move controllers, nor does it ship with the PlayStation Camera. That, in particular, is an interesting omission, considering the Camera is required in order for PlayStation VR to work at all. Sony claims that the reason for this is that many PS4 owners already own the Camera, but PlayStation VR bundles will apparently be sold – including the Move and Camera accessories – but perhaps unsurprisingly, Sony isn’t saying how much those bundles will cost.
Just as we already suspected, the PS VR’s 5.7-inch OLED screen is capable of displaying games at up to 120 frames per second, and is capable of full 1080p resolution gaming. Sony says that 50 games will be released between the PS VR’s launch in October and the end of the year.
October is still quite a long way away though, so there is plenty of time for more clarity surrounding the PlayStation VR. Hopefully, we will know more as time progresses and we get closer to that October release date.
