There is an almost incomprehensible number of apps purporting to be the pinnacle of photo editing on iOS, but in actual fact, very few actually deliver the goods. Fuelled by the rise of Instagram, which, in itself, isn’t particularly wonderful for touching up images, the number of new variations of the image editor are streaming through Apple’s iconic App Store on a near hourly basis.
To get the most from the billion dollar, Facebook-owned social sharing app that is Instagram, most find it beneficial to have one or two apps on the side to further enhance an image before posting. For all of the filters which Instagram offers, it’s a pretty amateurish experience for the seasoned photo manipulator, and if you’re still looking for something with that cutting edge, Photo Toaster may just have you covered.
It’s not a new app by any means, but its recent update – which packs in an Instagram plugin – certainly renders it noteworthy, and having reviewed in excess of 100 such apps, I cannot remember many better than Photo Toaster, created by East Coast pixels.
It offers a seemingly limitless inventory of features, and if you have the iPhone 4S, then you can really stand out among the mediocrity. For those who want simplicity, Photo Toaster offers 60 one-click effects, but if you’re looking for a more intricate experience in order to meticulously adjust your shots, this app is second to one.
You can utilize the professional level lighting feature to lighten up shadows and revitalize highlights, remove grainy areas from snaps taken in low-lighting, add textures, borders, crop, flip, rotate, and pretty much any other alteration you would expect to make in a decent photo app.
All editing is non-destructive, so if you go a little overboard and decide you’ve sabotaged your image, rest assured that the original will always be recoverable.
It costs $1.99, and for me, it’s the perfect accompaniment to any Instagram, Facebook or Twitter user; you’ll be amazed by the results you can yield.
