The last few weeks have been dominated by the announcement of new hardware from Apple and Nokia in the form of the iPhone 5 and the rather gorgeous looking Lumia 920, respectively. Media events held by Nokia and Apple concentrated on introducing the world to the two new pieces of kit and have succeeded in raising excitement levels for the future of the industry. Apple's new iPhone and the Lumia 920 are sure to be extremely successful in their own right, but it's also worth paying some attention to what the world's largest smartphone vendor - Samsung - has in store for us.
There’s no better stress reduction tool than taking control of something that you can fling at other objects in order to bring about total annihilation and creating utter chaos as you do it. Luckily for the designers and developers over at Rovio, they understood our need to break stuff and brought the fantastic Angry Birds title to our mobile and desktop devices which in turn catapulted them to the top of the iOS, OS X and Android charts. So what do you do after gaining so much success with a bunch of rage-filled birds? You take the next logical step, turn the tables around and release Bad Piggies.
If you are in the business of designing and developing accessories or cases for Apple hardware, or just a hardcore fan who has keen interest in the engineering behind products and how they are actually put together, then Apple's trend of releasing blueprints and schematics of their new mobile devices is sure to please. Over the weekend, we were treated to some rather detailed technical drawings of the sixth-generation iPhone and that has been followed up with the blueprints of the fifth-generation iPod touch and the seventh iteration of the iPod nano.
One of the things I look forward to after the announcement of an Apple product is the promo video from John Elerick on YouTube. They take the official “Introducing ” video from Apple, taking the lines and personalities in it, and add their own flavor of wit, sarcasm and parody to make a hilarious “ banned promo” video. The latest video which they uploaded earlier today spoofs the official introduction video of the iPhone 5. Check it out after the jump.
Although the iPhone 5 won’t be publicly available until this coming Friday, a number of people have started to report that their pre-ordered units have started their journey from China to their part of the world. We've seen this behavior in the past with Apple taking the opportunity to make sure devices are shipped well in advance so they actually do get delivered on launch day rather than leaving a trail of unhappy customers. It also makes perfect sense from a logistical point of view for the Cupertino giants to spread out their deliveries rather than attempting to deal with all pre-orders in one go.
As many technology enthusiasts and bloggers will tell you, the iPhone 5 might be a bit of a disappointment. Apple may be calling it the “biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone”, but I still believe that that description is for the iPhone 4 which introduced a sensational new design, considerably faster internals and, of course, the industry leading Retina display - significant improvements over the 3GS. Compared to that, the iPhone 5’s main new features include a tweaked, taller design and display, faster internals and support for 4G LTE - a wireless technology that is available only in very selected regions around the globe.
If you are still deciding whether or not Apple's latest iPhone release is the right device for you, then maybe you should consider listening to external opinions on that matter. It's understandable that a lot of consumers prefer to play the waiting game before purchasing a new device, opting to give it a few weeks after launch and see what owners have to say about the hardware after gaining some hands-on experience. If you are easily swayed by marketing releases, then AT&T's iPhone 5 related announcement could be the catalyst that sets you heading towards that pre-order button.
The iPhone 5 is a hotly anticipated device, with pre-orders hitting the 2 million mark in the first 24 hours of launch, it is all set to be the most sought-after device for this holiday season. Although the announcement of the iPhone 5 brought about quite a bit of criticism from certain people who wanted Apple to introduce an all-new design for the device, a company spokeswoman has already claimed that the interest in the new iPhone is "incredible".
The iPhone 5 event has been and gone, and although Apple didn't really announce anything that hadn't already been leaked or speculated about beforehand, it was deemed to be a major success. The immediate depletion of the pre-order sales stock confirms that Apple has a commercial success at hand in the for of the iPhone 5, but now that the excitement is over, consumers need something else to get their teeth into and get excited about.
After AnandTech’s analysis of Apple’s A6 chip, Geekbench has now posted first benchmark test of iPhone 5. The total score result, which shows iPhone 5,2 model sporting a Dual Core 1.02GHz processor, comes in at an impressive 1601.
