Mac Studio Refresh With M2 Chips Unlikely As Apple Focuses On Mac Pro

Apple’s Mac Studio might not get a refresh any time soon if a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is any indication.

Writing in his weekly Power On newsletter Gurman says that it doesn’t expect Apple to update its Mac Studio this year while it continue to work on the Mac Pro.

What’s more, he thinks that the differentiation between the two machines could be enough to give Apple pause until it has a way to make the two machines less similar.

I wouldn’t anticipate the introduction of a Mac Studio in the near future. The upcoming Mac Pro is very similar in functionality to the Mac Studio — and adds the M2 Ultra chip rather than the M1 Ultra. So it wouldn’t make sense for Apple to offer an M2 Ultra Mac Studio and M2 Ultra Mac Pro at the same time. It’s more likely that Apple either never updates the Mac Studio or holds off until the M3 or M4 generation. At that point, the company may be able to better differentiate the Mac Studio from the Mac Pro

The current Mac Studio ships with the M1 Max or M1 Ultra inside, meaning that the new model would likely go up against the M2 Ultra inside the Mac Pro if and when it ships later this year.

The Mac Studio and Mac Ultra would then only be differentiated by the size of the physical machine and the added space for expansion cards and drives within the Mac Pro.
