A new series of tests carried out by PCMag and Cellular Insights compares the iPhone XS Max, Samsung Galaxy S10, and OnePlus 7 Pro to see how they all fared with regards to signal strength and performance.
The LG V40 was thrown into the mix too, seeing as it was the best performing phone of 2018’s tests.
What makes these tests particularly interesting is the modems used. Intel’s XMM7560 is used in the iPhone XS Max, while the Qualcomm X24 sits in the Galaxy S10 and OnePlus 7 Pro. The Qualcomm chips are said to be faster, and Apple will be switching away from Intel as of next year.
According to the results posted by PCMag, all of the phones performed pretty similarly when there was a good LTE signal available, although the OnePlus 7 Pro and LG V40 did manage to sneak in a slight lead.
However, when the signal was poor the Intel-equipped iPhone XS Max did struggle when compared to those using Qualcomm’s modem.
With Apple moving away from Intel and using Qualcomm as of 2020 we can expect iPhones to perform better in the future, and 5G connectivity will also be added to the iPhone lineup as well. We’d expect that to arrive next year, too.
Intel for its part recently confirmed that it was pulling out of the 5G modem market, although it will continue to make 4G modems in order to meet its current contractual obligations. The 2019 iPhones are likely part of those obligations, marking the final iPhones that will include Intel modems.
