The iPhone 12 isn’t expected to be announced until September 2020 but that isn’t going to prevent the rumors and leaks. The latest of those is a Macotakara report based on an iPhone 12 dummy unit that was picked up from Alibaba.

Macotakara is usually pretty spot on with its first-hand reporting, but the fact this comes from something that was found on Alibaba is a concern. But looking beyond that, this supposed dummy unit is interesting in a few ways.

First, it shows the same iPhone 4-like design that analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been suggesting for months. That means boxier sides and a more edgy look than the smooth bar of soap-like design we’ve become accustomed to since the arrival of the iPhone 6.

There’s also what looks to be some sort of Smart Connector on the phone’s side, although it isn’t clear what that might be used for.

At this point, we’re taking this with a huge pinch of salt. Again, we don’t doubt Macotakara here but the fact this dummy came from Alibaba doesn’t fill us with confidence. That said, be sure to check out Macotakara’s video for a look at what might be the iPhone 12.

We’ll be waiting for more details in the coming weeks and months before we get too excited about Apple returning to that beloved iPhone 4 look, though.
