Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

    I got blackra1n to work after 4-5 tries… not sure what actually allowed it to work, but since then winterboard doesn't seem to be fully functional (it won't put in my picture onto the desktop… still a black screen), but I haven't checked it out fully yet. Also I can no longer use iphonebrowser… it crashes when I try to run it. But I am impressed that Asad managed to do this it all, considering the problems dev team had just getting the Mac version out!

  3. SAme with me…my phone was unlocked before….
    now when I try n update…the blackrain gets stuck at “entering recovery…”
    what does this mean?
    please help…
    also, my phone seems to show some pic of iTunes with USB.
    it doesnt show me the slide bar either…

  6. dude, this didnt work for me…my phone gets locked after the 3.1.2 is downlaoded.
    after which when i shut down itunes and all related processes, and start black rain, nothign happens “entering recovery…”screen is frozen on my pc for hours…
    please help….please mail suggestions…if you can…

  7. I was messing around with this for hours and finally got it working, this is what I did.

    1.) Restore iPhone to 3.1.2

    2.) Restart iPhone and PC

    3.) When iTunes asks if you want to restore or setup new phone, I ran blackra1n.

    4.) The iPhone enters recovery mode but seems to hang and not do anything, so I close blackra1n and turn off my iPhone (hold down power and home until it shuts off).

    5.) Turn the iPhone back on and it should enter recovery mode again. Then launch blackra1n (not in XP compatibility mode), press make it ra1n and then it should install!

  8. So previously I had iPhone 3.0 still on my phone, and I used Blackra1n and it worked perfectly. Then I went into iTunes and updated to 3.1.2 and tried to JB with blackra1n, and I get the same error as everyone-“Stuck on running”. The screen changes to 'connect to iTunes' and doesnt change. And if I unplug and forcibly reboot, it is unnessary to actually connect to iTunes at all to get my phone working again.

    im working on iphone 2 g with 3.1.2 .

  11. Damn my impatience. I had already upgraded to 3.12 using Itunes a few days ago unaware that this jailbreak was coming. Is there a way around so that I can use this or am I stuck until the next jailbreak comes along?

  15. Highly recommend you wait for Greenpoison project by the Dev Team. Purplera1n never worked for me and i'm suprise Blackra1n had the same results. If its good for you then enjoy, but if it didnt work thee first time-stop and save your device from losing your IMEII. Thats the point where you practically burnt out your device.

  16. My phone was jailbroke with 3.1, updated to 3.1.2 and tried blackra1n and it was stuck on running for 2 hours before i stopped it. Now i have to restore back to 3.1.2 through i tunes and try again. Tried on Vista 32bit.

  18. My iPhone 3G S only arrives at Recovery Mode and never “reboots.” The application says “Entering Recovery Mode” and never goes past that screen.

  19. To get it back to life just do a hard reatart, press home and power bottom until goes off and release home bottom keep power bottom for 2 secs. And release…

  28. i have tried all the solutions i can find on the web at the moment and none of them seem to work for me. ihave followed the solution posted above by the letter. My iphone 3g is stuck on recovery mode and never truly functions unless it's restored. I am running windows vista 32 bit.

  37. make sure under your Task Manager and Processes and all iTunes related processes are killed. It worked for me only after i ended all the Itunes helper and other things

  39. The install failed on my phone, lost all my data, photos and everything…. backup restore worked but did not restore pictures taken by the camera, only from the library.

  41. copy the blackra1n to your C drive and run it as administrator (make sure you close all itunes)

  43. I have Windows 7 & 3.1.2 8GB iPhone and none of the combinations worked except putting blackra1n.exe in C: and changing the properties>compatibility to Run as Admin & Windows 95. XP and Vista wouldn’t work, but 95 did. =D TRY IT!

  44. Worked for me just check the log to see if its working, i hit make it rain b4 i plugged in my phone worked fine after that 3.1.2 3g, all good

  49. i accidently forgot to upgrade to 3.1.2 and i already jailbroke,,, when i put in dfu mode and then try to update, its get an error…
