Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  1. well i did that and i got one step closer, got stuck at the running screen. and the dudes pic never showed up on phone. should i run it in XP mode?

  2. Maybe a dumb question, but I prefer to ask: My primary computer is a Mac. Can I use this process just to jailbreak my iPhone 3G (already updated with iPhoneOS 3.1.2 via iTunes in Mac) and after this, continue working in Mac?

  3. Has anyone tried syncing ‘non apple store’ sourced apps with itunes on the 3gs using this method to unlock yet?

If so, did you download appsync for 3.0 from cydia??

  4. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just used this. Followed all the instructions and now I have to restore my phone. What crap.

  5. I did that now I can't jailbreak it again. Originally I downgraded the firmware from 3.1 to 3.01 and jailbroke it. Then I saw Blackra1n and thought I could have the latest upgrade on the phone and still jailbreak it but it didn't work and now I can't downgrade it anymore.

  6. In the same boat. Tried it several times, and it never went past the waiting to reboot but my iphone stays stuck in recovery mode. Rerunning blackra1n did not help and each time I had to do a full restore (argh).

  7. this is how i jailbroke my iphone 3gs
    hope this will help….

after i updated itunes and my iphone firmware i restarted my laptop.
then i terminated bonjour, firewalls and all anti virius.
put blackra1n program in the c drive.
    make sure itunes is closed.
run blackra1n as an administer then when its say waiting on phone connect your phone… thats how it worked for me….

i have a vista 32 bit laptop and i DID NOT change it to the xp compatibility. 3.1.2 iphone 3gs and it worked for me.

    hope this helps

  8. It does work. Please make sure you close iTunes completly before starting blackra1n, even killing Ituneshelper process and IpodService service and the mdnsresponder service as well (if applicable) . For those who are having problems with it staying in recovery and not doing anything try this…

    1) Use compatibility for XP SP2 not SP3
    2) Ensure that within iTunes you have unchecked “Sync Automatically” and under Edit -> Preferences, Devices, choose Prevent iTunes from syncing with Devices Automatically.
    3) Put it in Airplane mode (remember to take it out of airplane after the jailbreak before trying to install Cydia)

I did everything listed here and it worked for me. Give it a shot!

  9. Dear Friends,

I was able to go up to the last step i.e. installed Cydia and I did not reboot. When I selected Cydia, the iPhone was showing some “Recognizing will automatically close when Done” and then I don’t see any of the iPhone standard logos and also I don’t see the Cydia logo….

Any help here will be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Nikee

  10. Like many users before it ate huge half of my Sunday. I've done everything, and nothing seemed to do it for my iphone 3g 8 gb. Finally i took my sons Ipogd touch ( bought in beginning of summer 2009, updated to 3.1.2 and in Jailbroke it in seconds!), so it does not matter what you do, it is probably the device acts up! I still unjailbroke mine iphone and now after i updated to 3.1.2 perspectives are questionable. Does any one know if you buy one out of the box now which software it will have?

  11. Hi Guys..i run this jailbreak on Windows 7.Even i have done every step&warnings i failed every time. Finally i found the reason BEWARE O USING ANTIVIRUS WHILE JAILBREAKING.For example PANDA is blocking proccess. This jailbreak working fine on IPHONE 3G 16GB.THANKS

  12. Someone please help I have 2 phones that I've tried the 1st one worked just fine accepted the blackra1n installed it fine. The second iphone (same model & specs) is giving me problems, I've tried to follow all instructions that everyone has given and still not working. It's starting to make me go a little crazy. Please any suggestions would be appreciated

  13. I can confirm that this does work, BUT it seems to have the same problem that redsn0w had. If you have a really fast processor the software is convinced that it has finished the procedure before it has even started so it doesnt install. It never works on my 3.4ghz machine but always works on my crappy 2.4ghz p4 laptop. I assume it is just a timing thing. Hope this helps. Good luck all.

  14. just want to know, I have never jailbreak and unlock my rogers 3g iphone. Would this software “blackra1n” work on it.

  15. finally got it working, dont know how just KEEP TRYING!!!! i think when i got stuck on the usb/itunes screen, i opened up a fresh blsckra1n, rebooted and started all over 5+ times eventually worked

  16. Thank AmarThakkar, it works.
The most important is restart computer, running blackrain without opening iTunes.

  17. I just have to say you are in a good way and it works for me at third attempt so don’t giveaway make shure you are doing all steps correctly and try again

  18. Yes and don’t forget to disable any iTunes process runing on the task manager and remain iTunes closed

  19. it does not give me the option to change it to “xp compatibility.” and im on an XP computer

  20. Tried it, follow all instructions. blackra1n on PC says done, but iphone reboots to emergency calls only, no way to get to Step 7 and actually get into the phone to run blackra1n itself.

    Any help appreciated.

    Lardinio

  21. so i followed the instructions step by step until i got to the point were it says run the app in windows xp compatibility mode and i got lost there. so if anyone can tell me how to do that it would be greatly appreciated. even though i didn't know how to do that i continued with the instructions and i got stuck were it says running… so if some one can tell me what to do more thoroughly it would be very nice

  22. Thanks Jay! Worked like a charm! I guess the key is to not connect to iTunes…i just used my laptop, removed iTunes and then just ran the hack and worked perfectly. Thanks again!!

  23. tried this exactly, but i get stuck in recovery mode i think. (it says itunes with the usb cord)

  24. right click on the application icon and click on Properties. Select “Compatibility” tab and check “Run this program in compatability mode for:” Windows XP Service Pack 2.

  25. Works perfectly! highly recommend. Just bought a new 3GS that came with 3.1 installed so I had problems to jailbreak, then I found this software. Seriously took half a minute.
