Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. It didn't work for me either. Here is what I did:
    I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

    Go to task manager and kill all iTunes related apps. iTuneshelper and anything that has to do with iTunes.

    Connect iPhone

    Go to properties of Blackra1n and select run in XP compatibility

    Run Blackra1n and follow their instructions.

    Thats the only way it worked for me.

  5. im using windows vista (7) and i have an ipod touch 2g 3.1.2 FW. I didn't make it run as admin or change it to xp service pack 2 and it worked. i also had itunes down

  6. I got up until step 6. The blackra1n image did appear on my iTouch. At that point I left to make food to let the program do its thing. I came back and Black. It never rebooted. My iTouch just remained black for 20 minutes or so (give 10, take 5 min).

  7. I have Iphone 3G 3.1.2. After like 5 or 6 attempts it did not work. I restored in itunes, and tried 3 times and it worked. Installing cydia. Good luck

  8. ok I've tryed 3 time.. All I did was drag blackra1n out of the save folder and put it on my desktop.. click it and it started right up. Itunes was running and it work…

  10. this is really stressful ive been searching all over google for instruction on what to do ive done everything yall have and still stuck on running screen im updated to 3.1.2 using newest itunes original usb cable windows professional not windows 7 though or vista i have XP i have the 3g by the way and well i ended the mdsnsresponder or whatever its called and all itunes proccesses and even did it on 4 dfferent computers and still nothing

  11. Doesn't work for me, just stuck in a loop of restoring to factory settings every time I try to run blackra1n (even though it says “done!”)

  14. It took a few tries and I had to restore the iphone but eventually it worked after 6 or 7 times. It's quick so don't wait too long. If the usb screen is locked for more than 2 min. Try again

  16. you were not able to boot your itouch either?? mine is still black with absolutely no hope of coming back to life. is there a step im missing as far as getting it to simply reboot?

  17. Have you try putting the file one you desktop and not running it out of the saved file? thats what I did and It worked

  18. DO NOT run in compatibility mode on Vista. Just run it normally. Its the only way it worked. Jailbroke my phone and then my wife's.

  20. Alright, had some troubles at first. Running Win 7 64. Was stuck on iTunes recovery but now seems to be working. Made sure iTunes was 64 Bit and made Blackra1n on the desktop. Restarted computer. I-Tunes open = fail. iTUnes closed = success. SO far so good .

    just have to confirm u have the latest itunes, 3.1.2 firmware, and download the blackrain at the main website.

    and after that upgrade your firmware to 3.1.2, and click on black rain, and u will see the boy face come out and it said wait to reboot wait like 10 sec and u see ur iphone bottom , ur iphone are loading and waiting to reboot and after reboot! kaboom ! U jail brake it

  30. every time i click make it ra1n it goes through the first couple things and then always get stuck on the running tab. My phone then stay on the connect to itunes screen until i restore it again. I have an iphone 3g for AT&T. Someone please help me resolve this problem!

    5)connect your iphone

  37. This is NOT an UNLOCK tool. Wait for Dev-Team to come out with the new Pwn for Windows. If you don't you may lose your ability to unlock permanently!

  38. hey i have got cydia now and i am able to access it also but i am not able to use my phone as it is not unlocked as my version is now 3.1.2 and firmware is 05.11.07 carrier is AT&T 5.5.

    Please guide how to unlock it plzz this would be the greatest help for me .

  40. Didn’t work for me. It put my iPhone in recovery mode, rebooted it, etc, but I don’t have a blackra1n application. This is an iPhone 3G and I’m running Windows 7. Tried running in XP compatibility mode. Didn’t work. I then tried running it as administrator. Didn’t work.

  42. I have the IPhone 3GS 3.0.1 jailbroken with redsn0w. I read somewhere if I have an already jailbroken phone I should not use this blackra1n method. Have anyone gone through this?

  45. Ok, I did have issues but finally it worked and it jailbroke my 3G 8gb. Not sure why is this process different but I cannot access any of the System folders on the iPhone. I am using IphoneBrowser and Ifunbox, but I can only see few user folders and none of the system folders. I want to replace the system text message sounds. It used to work before on 3.1 with Pwanage tool. :((((((((((

  46. Can honestly say that for me redsn0w was way more easy. i have tried everything on this forum and others and even a few youtube videos and i see no reason why its not working.
    1. put exe in c:/ (ran it with XP on and off)
    2. turned off all iTunes aplacations
    3. opened Blackra1n
    4. connected iPhone (with 3.1.2 FW)
    5. Clicked MakeItRa1n
    6. and it made it as far as the running screen and the guys Pics never showed up. i waited for ten min. anyone else have this prob, or am i the black sheep that got the gaya$$ iphone?

  48. Not going to complain cuz I appreciate it’s still in it’s first few days of being made
    I’m just putting it out there so that a solution could be made. After seeing the blackra1n pic on my phone it switches of and will not switch back on I have tried this several times following all the instructions and tips from people on the site but it still won’t work no matter what.

    i tried it on windows XP professional

    so whats wrong ?

    it goes into recovery mode when i pushed on *Make it rain*

    then after some seconds i get a blue blank screen with nothing on it * not the picture that i was supossed to*

    and on my computer i get the message that my iphone is jailbreaked but when my iphone restarts its just the same as usual…

    so please can someone help me on this, maybe explain whats wrong ?

    have someone else the same problem or is it just me ?
