Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  1. nothing i try is working, i get stuck in recovery mode… i was wondering if someone could post something on what needs to be done correctly in order for it to actually work… maybe a vid or a list of what needs to disabled. thx

  2. Worked easy as. I have a 3gs which was on 3.1 Didn't bother restoring as already on that version. Ran the blackra1n.exe program with the ph connected to usb, clicked on “makeitrain” and it did the rest. Bloody beauty mate !!! Couldn't believe it actually worked !! Have installed Cydia and PDANET and tethering is running perfect. Brillant thankyou blackra1n !!!!

  3. Worked great for me. Restored to 3.1.2, then ran blackra1n in xp compatibility mode (as admin). Once the phone rebooted, the blackra1n app on my pc didn't finish, so I just closed it. Connected to wifi, installed Cydia, upgraded Cydia.

  9. If you have PDAnet desktop client, right click on the icon in the system tray and exit. Unplug iphone, reconnect. If it offers to open a folder on the device (as a drive) do it. Then run blackra1n. This got me passed being stuck at the USB recovery screen. Everything worked as advertised. Also tried to install cydia and rock at the same time. Rock failed on first try. Tried installing it again on it's own. No problem

  10. I ran it, and accidentally unplugged my iPhone.
I restarted the iPhone and blackra1n.
Now it’s stuck on “Running” and I’ve tried disabling anti-virus, firewall, and closing all iTunes processes. Any suggestions?

  17. Unable to jailbreak a 3G phone at firmware level 3.1.2.

Using a updated itunes with Windows vista. Have run as Administrator/Normal with XP2 compatibility/Normal … but to no avail. Have also tried killing ItunesHelper and or IpodService.

Phone stays at recovery screen, blackra1n says running … if I reboot the phone it will boot normally but without blackra1n installed.

    Any help will be appreciated.

  18. If you get stuck at the recovery screen, do this:
    1. Move blackra1n.exe to your C:/ drive (Copy the .exe file & paste it in the C Drive)
    2. Check your Task Manager for any iTunes processes running and close them!
    3. Run BlackRa1n.exe as Administrator (right click)

This Jailbreak supports all models of the iPod Touch and iPhone and is, by far the easiest jailbreak to date!!

  19. Holy F! As soon as I posted the comment above I was able to get it to work. 8th attempt this is what I did:
After closing iTunes, moved the blackra1n.exe file to C drive (C:/). Made sure that the Windows XP was UNCHECKED (this came from tips from comments on Redmond Pie's website), ran blackra1n as admin, clicked make it rain and got stuck at entering recovery, reopened iTunes and performed a shift recover of the 3.1.2 file, once all that was done blackra1n claimed done, but it truly wasn't, I closed blackra1n and then re-ran it, it actually moved past entering recovery to running and was seriously done in 30 seconds or so. WoW!
Now I'm not going to claim that this is the procedure to follow, but it worked for me.

  20. OMG…after all the post and all the cries for help.. i disabled itunes and all my anti-virus ..as soon as i connetd my phone it took all of 15 seconds for this to work….1. disable ipod/iphone in task /device manager then any anti-virus program you may have… there's a chance you may have more than one but it was great…..i have cydia and icy both

  21. ok, i tried n tried thn did word for word with above, and it worked!
great stuff. will keep testing thn donate to the guy for his work.

  22. HOLY COW !! IT WORKED !!!! I MESS UP THE FIRST TRY had to do a recovery . .whoo .. . DID NOT FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS . 1) MUST HAVE FIRMWARE 3.1.x 2) MUST HAVE latest ITUNES installed and running . before you try .. finally USE XP !!!

  23. Holly Cow, it worked !!! .. Got into trouble the 1st time . Did not follow the directions. You must follow them exactly. Got into a hot panic for a bit .. as I had to do a restore.. BUT IT WORKS for the 3GS !!! .> THANKS!!

  24. Has anyone gotten this to work on Windows 7 64 bit yet? I can't get past the iTunes and USB Logo screen.
