Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. it’s a feature. tethering.- you can’t turn it off.

    so each time you turn off ur phone, u need to run blackra1n again to boot it up.

    if your’s already jb, it blackra1n won’t re-jb it,it will just boot it up.

  11. When I install black ra1n and cydia, if I change mind and want to restore to factory settings. Is this possible?
    Might be a stupid question just incase I have to send it back to manufacturer if the phone breaks.

  13. Hi, as far as i know there was a hardware change for later iphone 3gs and that change make it difficult for JB iphones to boot without a pc or mac.

    Now if ever you need to turn off your iphone or reboot it, yes it will show that you need to connect to itunes and restore. But instead of doing that, just run blackra1n again. it will not install anything again, it will just help your iphone to boot up so you retain the JB state of your iphone/itouch

  18. i have 3gs 3.1.2 jailbreaked and unlocked. It worked perfect the first time and on subsequent reboots over 6 months. But for some unknow reason, it frooze promting what seemed like another ordinaqry reboots. This time after plugging in the usb, and running blackra1n, the reboot simply stuck. Now, plugging in usb prompts iphone in recovery mode in itues and requests restore. Restore then requires upgrade to 3.1.3, which several posts have said NOT to as it would change some bandwidth and unenable unlocks and jailbreak forever. So i didn’t restore. Now Please help. I have tried rebooting with blackra1n 100 times all following instructions.

    I am on window 7 and i have gone into properties to change blackra1n’s compatibility to xp service pack 2.

    1) disable 3 itune related processes in task manager.
    2) start “make it rain”, quickly hit power off and home button at the same time, holding it then releasing power when apple logo apprears, then releasing home button when gehot’s image appears.

    This has yet to work. It just re-run “blackra1n” over and over until i end the blackra1n process. Then it just goes to plug usb to itunes image (recovery) and stops.

    What should I do??

  20. well, if u mean unjailbreak it w/out upgrading to 3.1.3 u can do dat. First, go into cydia and uninstall all ur cydia apps. then, go to the blackrain app and click unisntall cydia. then, click uninstall blackra1n. voila! its like u nvr jb it

  24. there is no way out yet unless you can restore with 3.1.2. but from my experience, apple seems to know that you have tamper the phone and won't let you restore 3.1.2. unless a new jailbreak comes up, if you want to use your phone, you have to restore to 3.1.3.

  26. i bought an iphone 3GS in december 09. it was in 3.1.2 and i successfully installed blackra1n and cydia then wen i tried to unlock it by installing the second or third software below cydia in the list of blackra1n application,my phone just crashed and was left with no choice but restore it(why did it crashed???i just follow all the instruction from the blackra1n web).but to restore,i tunes required me to update.i updated and my applications go crazy n download datas on its own.. i am running broke.. pls come up with a solution for the 3.1.3 firmware asap… i am kinda noob in this iphone+computer stuff… took me a whole month even to identify that iphone could be and what is unlocking and jailbreaking.. running on windows 7…

  27. i had to downgrade from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 and now that i have done that, whenever i launch the blackra1n app on my PC, itunes wont let me install it on my iPod unless i restore my iPod back to its original firmware. have i done something wrong???

  28. I accidentally upgraded to 3.1.3 and now apple stopped verifying any firmware 3.1.2 and lower…does anybody know how to get passed apple's verification sequence? I haven't stored it with cydia.

    i've unlocked my iphone 3gs 3.1.2 version one… i'm thrilled with the experience of my iphone but i've got a problem…. after switching it off, its going to the recovery mode… so plz could u help me out with dis problem….
    i used blackra1n to unlock it but… wen after switching it off n gives me a recovery mode then again i've to use blackra1n to make it work properly…
    Is there any way to make it use properly….?

    I'”ve unlocked my Iphone 3GS 3.1.2 version one… with blackra1n and i'm thrilled with the experience of my iphone…. but i've got a problem also with, i.e, when i switch it off… my iphone goes to recovery mode… how can i overcome this problem….

    When the phone goes to recovery mode i had to rerun the blackra1n application…. is there any solution for this problem????????

  33. Blackra1n is a tethered jailbreak…just don't turn off you ipod and you'll be fine. and if you do…just plug in your ipod to your computer, ignore the itunes message about a ipod in recovery mode, and run blackra1n again.

  36. whats the version, is it 3.1.2 (7D11) with modem firmware 05.11.07, then you can easily do it with blackra1n, if its anything higher than the above, you cant for the time being

  37. thats how how it is going to be with new bootrom, probably yr phone is with new bootrom, u will have to until the unlcoking softwares are released.

  39. @chan. There is no way to restore an ipod/iphone that's running firmware 3.1.3 back to firmware 3.1.2. I do believe that the Dev Team is coming out with the Green Pois0n jailbreak in June/July. They are waiting because the new iphone 4g is coming out.

  45. The blackra1n program on your desktop? if so, it doesn't, it's just a message you can close it and wait for your ipod to go back to the lock screen.

  47. You cant downgrade to 3.1.2 firmware if you already installed 3.1.3 firmware baby, have to wait for a new release software to jail break iphone/ipod with firmware 3.1.3

  48. I jailbroke my iPhone 2g (version 3.1.2) and used cydia to enable native mms. But sincethe jailbreak, my phone no longer saves the MMS APN, username and password in the Cellular Data part which means i can send picture msgs…
    I don't understand any of this stuff and i just want to be able to send and recieve pic msgs. Can you help, please?
