Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. i heard something about a guy using an itouch 2g 3.1.2 firmware to downgrade maybe it works with the iphone

  2. Its because you have a 3g either 3g ipods or iphones cant be turned off or connected to itunes or else it will go into recovery mode. Only 2gs can be turned off and nothing will happen.

  6. So I have an iphone 3g, just got it 2 hours ago, it already had cydia since it was unlocked. But it was not jailbroken. It’s running 3.1.2 firmware. I followed all the steps. I have windows 7, so ran in compatibility mode. and I get the message saying the “jailbroke was successful, if this was the easiest jailbreak ever…” My phone reboots and everything, but I don’t see blackra1n in my phone.. help?

  7. I got my 2g iphone updated in Hong Kong with Panda Daemon to 3.0.1. When I go into itunes it tells me I need at least 8.2 version. I have 8.1. I’m too scared to update my itunes. Please could you give me some advice. I was thinking about upgrading myself to 3.1.2 with blackra1n….but I am a bit blonde!

But now it does not work what I can see on the iphone screen is just the USB and conect to the itune. I would like to restore and unlock it and use the GSM sim card.   24. Hello i have a 3gs and have to reboot it allot because i let the battery go.. but i downloaded blainrain on my mac but it dusnt work although on every other pc/mac it will reboot my phone 🙁 helpp plzzzz 🙂

  25. Since I installed blackra1n and cydia, in the upper left corner where the carrier name and the bars are located, all it says is searching… I can still make calls and everything as if i have service but searching… wont go away. Anyone seen this before?

  26. I have IPhone 3GS. I was able to jailbreak it fine. But, when i turn it off, it asks me to connect to itunes to turn it back on, where i'd have to restore to get it to work again.     My iphone 3g has already a jailbreak done with Redsn0w and firmware 3.0…what are the steps in my case? restore the iphone completely, install the firmware 3.1.2 and after run blackra1n?? or I can just go on directly with blackra1n?

  30. ok sooo I downlaoded this restart app off of ROCK, and my phone has stayed with the restart screen that has the silver apple logo all day. I let my phone die, adn when i recharged it, it still has the restart screen. I went to restore my phone and it keeps saying “cannot restore, error” what the eff do i do

  32. OK I need some help but I think this is possible…I have iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 with baseband 5.11.07. I did jailbreak with blackra1n and got the tethering working but accidentally uninstalled before I put the Cydia app on the springboard. So here is my question – is there any way to restore to 3.1.2 (with 5.11.07)? That way, I should just be able to rerun blackra1n and this time install Cydia.

  33. I have the exact problem, and now it is no longer a problem!!! Just hook phone into itunes, let it say that new doftware and detected an iphone needed to restore. close them move itunes down, open black rain let it rain, wallah!! you are finished. You do not have to restore, and your iphone will still have all the cool stuff and will still have all songs from itunes and still have cydia. It will even sync, and when done unplug and that is that.

    POINTERS> every time you shut phone off you will need to do that. I leave my phone on forever. I cycle battery down to 5% or less 1 time each month and then charge it fully, other than that I just charge it every 2 days or so.

  34. As far as I know, there is no way with Blackra1n.. you have to use the Dev Team’s Pwngetool. Not sure what verison, but the latest one..

    The tool is only for a Mac, and you have to create a custom Firmware with the jailbreak, and do a restore using the custom Firmware.

  37. I completed the download and followed the instructions above which worked like a breeze, im only having one issue….

    I have a Iphone 3GS 3.1.2 and for some reason when I turn my Iphone off then back on, it indicates that I need connect to Itunes in order for it to startup. When I turn on the Iphone it shows me a picture asking to be connected to itunes….

    Does anyone have a resoloution for this or any tips I can try out?
    It would be muchly appreciated if anyone can point me in the right direction,

  46. ive got myself in a rut….ive got a iphone 2g 1.1.4. jailbroken using ziphone in 2008. i have updated to firmware 3.1.2 and now the phone will not exit out of emergency calling mode. tried blackra1n and after its succesful completed operation it still wont work. need help guys…if possible

  48. When i downloaded it, it worked great. About 2 and a half weeks later i tried pressing the messaging application from apple and it just paused. I turned it off and the only way i could open it up was to restart my phone. Please tell me what happend and if i download blackra1n again it will work.

    can i upgrade with Original FW 3.1.2 and then jb it with blackra1n ?
