Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  2. Question: how long does the iphone take to reboot it self after letting blackra1n do its “thing”. I want to reboot it myself but the little box says “Done, wait for reboot” and its been like this for the past 20 mins. What should I do? reboot it myself or leave it?

  5. I got the same problem, yesterday it suddenly restarted and can’t get it to boot properly ever since… It’s being stuck on the blackra1n / geohot logo for some minutes, then a spinning wheel appears on top of that logo and after 5 or so minutes it reboots once again…
    I don’t know if I should wait for some fix or not… Anyway I’m screwed because I need my iPhone to be unlocked till beginning of March…

  6. I have similar problem with blackra1n. Yesterday it rebooted out of nowhere and I can’t get it boot properly ever since. It’s being stuck on the blackra1n / geohot logo for some minutes, afterwards the spinning wheels appears on top of it and after another few minutes it’s rebooting automatically again… What the hell? I’ve tried a lot of things but didn’t helped…
    I don’t know if I should wait for some kind of fix or not… I need my iPhone to be unlocked till March, otherwise I’m screwed…

  11. boris, i get the same problem. i just never turn my phone off. if i need to turn it off, i do it at home or at a friends place where i can run blackra1n again. its so lame. i’m guessing i messed up somewhere during the jailbreak? its not too big of a deal.

  14. I have a iphone 3g jailbroken already with 3.0 update. Just wondering if i do this update with blackra1n will all my stuff (installous apps and winterboard stuff) still be on the phone or will it be erased? or can i just do a back up and be good? Please someone Help..Thanks

  16. crazymobiles, I downloaded the blackra1n update on the 3.1.3 and there was no geo logo. it said it downloaded and like everyone else it was not done. how long before the new one is available? I just came over to at&t from sprint where i unlocked my palm pre. i cant wait to jailbreak my iphone… =)

I got a itouch version 3.1.2 I downloaded blackra1n and it worked okay (exept I did not know how to download games) I just download 3.1.3 on itunes and my itouch is stuck, I had to “restore” all my songs and games erased. What do I do? It has a usb pointing to an itunes symbol. WHen will blackra1n 3.1.3 come out?

  23. That is stuck like that im afraid. The newest iPhone’s now have a different boot sequence which will not allow them to run a jailbreak from boot up. Its a problem im stuck with too.

  29. Dear Friends i really need your help as now i am in deep mess. my iphone crashed & now am not able to restore.

    My Iphone Details :

    Iphone 3GS (New Bootrom)
    Firmware : 3.1.2
    Baseband: 5.11.07
    Jailbroken/Unlocked : Blackra1n
    I don’t have the shsh file but have written down my ECID

    Today i downloaded some keyboard from cydia & it asked me to reboot the device, which i did and since then i got stuck on to The Restore screen.

    Methods Tried:

    Redsnow 0.9.2 & 0.9.3: Gets stuck on the screen which says “downloading the jailbreak” & a something at the bottom keeps circling & later restarts n goes back to the Restore Screen.

    Blackra1n : Image of that guy comes on the screen & stay there for few minutes & again restarts & goes back to the restore screen.

    Pwntool 3.1.4 & 3.1.5 : after creating the custom firmware ask’s me to connect my device through USB, which i tried tried tried but it didn’t work..(I tried the DFU mode = Fail)

    Itunes 9.0.4: Tried to restore by downloading the firmware from iclarified and tried doing it through the Shift Button method but i could not restore got an error msg “ iphone not eligible for this bundle” (tried to restore both in DFU mode & normal restore mode”).

    Finally i tried the method of creating a localhost server thing (umbrella & tinytss) but didn’t succeed, as while restoring in itunes it gives me error msg (1601 (DFU Mode), 3001 (Normal Restore)). i get these error msges after “ verifying from apple server” but it takes about 3-4 mins before displaying the error msg.

    I am really tensed , please please help me.

  31. Hey everyone! I’m scared to do this because I worry that if I reboot my Ipod I will no longer be able to have any of my apps, music, videos, et cetera. If you reboot, how do you put everything back on????

  43. Mine Froze so i was forced to restore and update. but i found a way to unfreeze and restore jailbreak. it only works for blackra1n users. Install 3.1.3 update and when your ipod is able to be open do so, it will say springboard failure or something. go to winterboard and pick a theme and it will restore back to original. on itunes make sure to delete the pending update of 3.1.3. fhew…

  45. Have ipd 3.1.2 fw ran Blackrain worked no problem the kids delete rock & blackrain app reran blackran but it does not apperin apps when done any reson for this ?
