Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. Hi. I’m havin same problem with my 3GS 3.1.2. I read that Iphones made after 41st week of 2009 have installed different boot.., if in case Your unlocked iphone, turned off and turned on back, I tunes logo will come out everytime.., unfortunately no solutions founde for now, all You have to do is keep the battery full all the time to prevent rebooting.., If You want to finde out in what week of 2009 your iphone made, check serial number 4th and 5th numbers together indicates the week when it made..!

  2. New bootrom in iPhone 3GS is making your jailbreak weird. You will need to “make it ra1n” each time you reboot your iPhone. Just google something like “new bootrom iphone”.
    For wifi and youtube issue, found it on geohot blog:

    “Push and YouTube issues are caused by hacktivation. To fix, add http://cydia.iphoneil.net/ as a source and install “Push Fix””

    Worx like a charm here, just have to make it ra1n after every reboot.

  7. re-do everything. When you opened cydia the first time, you have to have your wifi set up so when it opens it can properly install all the needed things. Re do it and when cydia pops up click on hacker and click on install all upgrades or w/e then it shall work again. mess this process up the 1st time, and it willl close everytime you open it.

  8. i have an iphone 3gs Jailbroken 3.0 (7a341) firmware 04.26.08 modem firmware.
    i want to upgrade to 3.1.2 firmware. but i would like to keep all my cracked apps if possible and also be able to crack it again after i upgrade. also i see some warnings saying i wont be able to unlock if i upgrade. i am still with att so i dont need it to be unlocked now but i still want to be able to unlock it later, after i am done with my contract.
    so can some one please point me in the right direction and clear things up for me if i am wishful thinking here.
    any help would be appreciated

  13. using blackra1n requires upgrade to baseband and removes unlock ability…forever…cracked apps will still work but you should upgrade your appsync to 3.1…use the hackulo repository

  14. There is a lot of contradicting info in cyberspace regarding Blackrains tethered jailbreak.

    Could someone confirm what models of Iphone are a tethered jailbreak and which are not ie- require the process to be rerun each time the phone is switched off and on.

  23. Backup your device if you havent already. Right click on your iPhone and click backup. This saves all your contacts and your photos and lots of other settings. Now restore your iPhone. Re-Jailbreak and unlock (if needed) using Blackra1n. Make sure your wifi is on when you install cydia and open it for the first time. You need to make sure you let everything run the first time all the way. Dont hit cancel at the top. Hit upgrade all or upgrade essential and after it does that. Re open Cydia and click on hacker or consumer. Whatever fits. Now another huge tip is go into Cydia sources in the home tab and install Pwncenter. Once that is installed go to search and search for all sources. Download that and all sources given from Cydia will be installed. Great tip so you dont have to individually. Hope this helps.

  27. for me step 5 is not accurate. i had the problem of the phone sitting at the connect to itunes screen. i followed step 5 and set it to xp compatability mode and stopped ipod service and killed ituneshelper and it would not continue. as soon as i took off the compatability it went through instantly. hope this helps

I used backra1n on ipod touch 2G (3.1.2), restored and update using itunes. after this the thing won’t restore firmware or boot. returned to apple. they replaced the unit. tried the new ipod. same thing happened. does blackra1n destroy ipods when restoring/updating using itunes? How do I fix this?

  34. Here are a few tips to ‘new’ jailbreakers:

    1. Currently, the iPhone 3Gs is NOT capable of running a tethered jailbreak

    What does this mean?

    Every time your iPhone is turned off, whethere you hold the Sleep button for 5 seconds, or if your iPhone runs out of Battery, you will have to connect it to a computer and run Blackra1n to re-apply the Jailbreak. NOTE: You do not lose any cracked apps by reapplying a jailbreak

    2. After Step 8 in the guide, some 3Gs owners panic because their phone is showing a USB cable pointing to an iTunes logo. Is your phone bricked? No.
    Did you fail the jailbreak? No. Remember, 3Gs can only have a tethered jailbreak.
    To fix this, just run Blackra1n

    3. To get ‘cracked’ and ‘free’ AppStore apps, you need to add the Hackulous Repo, and download AppSync, as well as Installous.
    There are two ways to get the apps.
    1) Use the Installous App to download them using your iPhone
    2) Go to appulo.us and download them to your computer, and then just sync the apps using iTunes (Only works if you have AppSync)

    How do I Add the Hackulous repo?

    Go to Cydia on your IPhone, Select Manage, Select Sources, Select Edit, and then Add.
    In the Box that pops up type in: http://cydia.hackulo.us/
    Then Download AppSync, and Installous

    every time i launch blackrain a box comes up saying that my ipod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored…and it simply sits theres and does nothing. ice restored several times now and still nothing. what am i missing ive followed the instructions very carefully.

  47. WOW my 2g is now running 3.1.2! DONE! 15 minutes start to finish – Yesterday I accidentally ran an iPhone Upgrade from iTunes and blew out my t-mobile hack… I tried 10 hours yesterday using 6 different complete website step by step, download this and that to run 3.1.2 on my 2g with NO success. This worked first try. Once complete, I even used my older backup to restore my contacts, my text messages and everything. I'm making a donation to the ONLY dev group that has it down! Thank you VERY much. Craig

  49. Can we get some more info on the iPod touch 3g in here? You always refer to the phone, so things are going to be different. For example, steps 6 and 7. How long are we supposed to wait after clicking “make it rain”? What should appear on the screen after clicking? What should the app do/say when it has finished? That list of apps is only for the iPhone, what do we do?
    Please give a reply. I just tried this, but right after making it rain, the iPod asked me to update it. I did, since I don't want to destroy my iPod here. Please give us some more info.
