Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  3. Hi just wondering if somebody can break this down for me with a simple answer before I pull all my hair out…lol…
    I have a new 3GS iphone and running all the latest software updates via MAC.
    I download blackrain and then do the jailbreak. So the geohot logo guy comes on and then the iphone shows usb/itunes cable. So then after readin all the forums for the iphone to be accessed again, I just reload Blackrain again and its all good. But when I turn the phone on and off, nothing happends and the itunes/usb logo comes back on and I have to recover iphone in intunes for it to work again! Is there a way arounf this where I can turn my phone off and on and everything will just work as normal instead of having to jailbreak it again via blackrain to use the iphone? Or is this a problem that will be fixed..
    I just need a work around on how to comtinue the usage of my phone after its been on/off via jailbreak and I dont have to re0blackrain evertyine the phone goes off…

  7. if you have not updated the iphone with the latest version firm ware do so and this will automatically allow you to download blackra1n and and the other applications that you will n1) First back up your Iphone2) turn off your automatic sync on your itunes than you have to do is3) downlaod the (file:///PwnageTool_3.1.4.dmg) to your desktop4) Download fresh application from blackra1n to your desck top5) open the pwange application and follow the prompts exactly as indicated and this will reset your Iphone back to factory settings. Once you have done this do not not sync your iphone 6) Open blackra1n and folow the prompts exactly as indicated.________________________________

  10. hey… i iphone 3gs crashed 3 days after i unlocked it using Blackra1n for 3.1.2,,, i didn't have any crashing problem when i was using 3.0, unlocked through purplera1n. did i messed up installing blackra1n or did something gone wrong?? i'm just wondering what went wrong.

    i am using 2G iphone. i alredy download and install 3.1.2. now i get only emergency call only. i have a windows vista is here. blackran01 site is blocked here. so i can't get it. so please tell me other way to unloack or jailbrake my phone.

  12. hey, blackrain is a tethered jailbreak, meaning that once the phone gets turned off/runs out of battery, you have to plug it in to your computer and do run the blackra1n thing again. It'll work then

    Thanks to you guys always. few months back I could successfylly do JB and unlock iphone 3GS 3.0.1 and now using your help and the commenst I could succeed in doing the same for 3GS 3.1.2 also.

    Just updated iphone 3GS to 3.1.2 using itunes
    then downloaded blackra1n as per the information provided here in this site
    then executed on my Windows XP PC

    To my surprise every thing was smooth and kool
    now I have my 3.1.2 3GS iphone with unlock and JB

    The formal waof rebooting your iphone is just power off in the normal way
    Another way is forced shutdown
    Hold the HOME button and then keep pressing the power button until you see
    iphone poweroff, and then apple mark ( reboot) appears

  22. Hey Guys, I just jail broke my 3GS a week ago. No problems. I just found out my wireless is not connecting to any networks. It will not locate any even when sitting right next to one. I totally reset and Iphone and checked to make sure the wireless worked. It did then I re-did the downloads and jailbreak and no wireless again. I am running all of the updates. I jailbroke my GF's and no problems. I did load the correct software for the 3GS. Any ideas

  23. I was able to download blackrain completely, then when I tried installing the Winterboard, it had to reboot and now when I try to turn it on, it gets stuck on the apple logo and turns off. Reseting it won't help. Anyone know anything about this?

  26. i understand what you say, but, i have 2 3gs and 1 3g, it works like wonders in the 3g, but have that problem in the 3gs what can i do? is it a problem with 3gs only?, pls help

  27. have 3GS, 3.1.2 and followed all the correct steps. After reboot iPhone, iTunes and USB logo comes on. Tried 2 new 16GB phones. Samething!

    The only question that I have and need someone to tell me what it means…
    After you run blackra1n then it pops up a message that tells you that it’s complete but it also says, “For tethering, run again to boot”. What does that mean? I have tried to figure out how to tether and don’t seem to be able to do it. Even the tethering programs that I got off Cydia don’t work. Please, if someone knows what to do to get it to tether then reply to my comment. Other than this, I have NO problems.

    Just thought i would share my experience. I just got my iphone 2 days old and
    tried jailbreaking my iphone over 10 times and got soo fustrated because it kept on failing and comes up with USB -> Itunes. I spend the last 9 hours reading post after post to find out whats wrong.

    Then i found out that the link i downloaded was faulty. So i googled “blackra1n” and found the official website and downloaded it jailbroke in 30secs. (for Vista/Win7 users : run in normal mode, don’t use XP compatability mode)

  32. try rerunning blackra1n, while connected via usb. your tethered and this is what you have to do to get it going everytime you reboot

  33. HELP!!! i installed a teather for the 3.1.2 off of cydia, and it had to reboot, only problem is the ipod wont reboot? and ive tried to reinstall blackra1n, to reboot it but that wont work either?? what should i do?

  34. like 30 seconds, but your wifi sometimes will not work (to fix this just reboot) but youtube will also stop working (cannot conect to youtube) i myself still havnt found a solution for such things yet but jailbreaking is most defenetly is worth it

  35. Hi Guys, Its me again, happily using 3GS 3.1.2
    I want to give you nice information here which I experienced.

    1) I was using 3.0.1 JB, before updating to 3.1.2 I took took a backup using application called “aptbackup” which took backup of the list of all cydia applications, then took backup using itunes ( for applestore applictaions) then
    updated to 3.1.2;
    After executing blackra1n and finishing JB and Unlock; installed aptbackup again, restored backup from itunes. surprised to see all applications back in iphone.
    It worked for me 100% successfully

    2) After you break 3GS 3.1.2 using blackra1n, you can not explore your iphone files using USB connection. To make it possible to be explored by USB connection install a application called “Afc2add” (form Modmyi) great application.
    now you can browse your iphone files using USB connection (ifunbox etc etc)

  36. Hi, me too faced the same problem. Then I installed appstores free application called “ewifi” , run this application, this will connect to the usual Wifi first, use this 2 or 3 times, restart the iphone, now the normal wireless will work.

  37. does it need a connection after blackra1n in my iphone 3g 3.1.2 ver to complete the jbing, i am ethiopia & we dont have connection except for cdma sim cards!
    And can i get unlocking iphone tools to cdma.

  38. plug it in and run blackra1n again. it wont ruin anything. Probably this solution is just a temporarly solution. Every time you turn it off you will probably have ta same issue again.

  41. What is tethered? I have the same problem. have to use blackra1n every time i rebot my iphone. I allso can’t get any data conection with 3G connection or 2G. I have to use Wi-fi now.

  42. this is not true me and a freind both have iphone 3gs with firmware 3.1.2 i jail broke mine using blackra1n then did my friends the same but he can turn his off then turn it back on no problems but i have to plug mine back in an you get the itunes disc logo so have to rerun it every time my bat dies wich is way to often as the battery life on these things are poor to say the least

  45. Yeah I’ve hit the same problem as you. Restoring it is supposed to undo any jailbreaking and that should do the trick. I’m doing that right now actually.

  46. I am having the same problem as Austin and I was installing winterboard and it asked for a reboot then I turned it on it shows itune logo with usb wire. I have tried using the blackrain again and again but doesnt help. The itunes gives a msg the phone is in recovery more and restore to factory settings. I have tried blackrain in admin mode…I plugged iphone after making rain…nothings seems to help. Can anyone help me on this?
