Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  6. ok hi im new to this iphone jailbreaking of the 3gs it has became so different from the jailbreaking of 1st gen iphone on firmware 1.1.4. i have a 3gs that i bought 2weeks ago im from ireland and my 3gs carrier is o2 its on the carrier i use so i don't need to unlock it if i jailbreak t will it still be with the original carrier o2? im afraid to try and jailbreak it as from reading the comments it works for some and not for others? if someone could help me it would be great 🙂

  9. Worked Great!! I have iphone 3GS. First upgraded to 3.1.2 from “unjailbroken 3.1” then used blackra1n. Need to have patience…..but it worked FLAWLESSLY!!!!!!! The source for xsellize on iphone is cydia.xsellize.com. Thanks a billion to Geohot.

  11. I have iphone 3Gs. It stayed in recover for about 2-3 minutes. Have patience. It worked fine for me flawlessly.

  12. What about first-generation iPod Touches? Will it work on those?

    (Come to think of it, I'm not even sure that 3.1.2 is available for the 1G Touch; I haven't been asked to upgrade beyond 3.1.1 yet.)

  15. Still nothing! I tried 7 times . I'm doing on xp now. 4 times already.
    Without itunes.
    itunes and usb logo stock, after 5 minutes i did reset , and just an apple logo stuck there. reset again. Came back tried again, and again, again. No blacra1n! Any suggest?

  17. I have Windows 7 and iPhone 3G with software at 3.1.2. I have tried every solution posted in this thread and all I get is just hanging on the “running” part with phone in DFU mode. I have tried with and without iTunes running, tried running Blackra1n from the c: directly as an administrator. Nothing seems to work.

    Has anyone successfully used this app with the above configuration? if so, what steps did you take to make it work.

    Fully willing to donate once jailbreak is successful 😉

  19. If you get phone stuck on the Apple and itunes logo, simply open up itunes and then the hack will load on to the phone

  21. blackra1n puts the iphone in recovery mode. After that it installs the blackra1n on iphone 3G/3GS. I don’t know how that works. But you are not suppose to hit restore on itunes. It popped up on mine as well, but I closed the itunes. I had to wait for ~2-3 minutes then iphone rebooted. I have iphone 3GS.

  23. Still stuck, blackra1n says running… my 3g iphone screen is the itunes symbol and the usb cord on there now for about an hour…. whats going on here?? HELP!!!

  25. cant get it to work tried now like 5 times and still nothing just sits there for a while and does nothing… screen is in the recovery mode with the itunes logo and the usb cord pointing to it. blackra1n says running but still at this point for about 15 min at a time… what am i doing wrong here

  27. yay i finally managed to get mine to work 3g iphone, couldn't get it to work on windows 7 machine tried it on XP machine and after a few tries it finally got past the hanging and went through..

  30. It does work, however I found it needed a little push. I tried 4 times with out success. The final time worked when I moved the program to C: and ran it, it hung up saying waiting for recovery mode. I held the off button, then held both on and home button, waited 10 seconds then not letting go of home I continued to hold home until I heard the device connect sound. That time it worked. You'll see your phone restart with the blackra1n background image. (I find his stare a bit creepy) But it really does work. I'll be donating for sure.

  32. Let me clarify:
    I held the on/off button after it hung up for 3 min till the phone shut off.

    THEN I held both on/off button with home for 10-15 seconds, then kept holding home until I heard the windows reconnect sound.

  33. I am stuck on this too. I keep getting the synch to iTunes logo and then it does nothing. No reboot even after many minutes. I think I will withhold my donation.

  35. OK..I hope I get the steps right, because I finally got it to work on Win 7 iPhone 3g 3.1.2.

    disable all iTunes processes from task manager
    run blackra1n from the root of c:
    at this point should say “waiting for phone”
    restart phone by pressing off/home
    once apple appear, connect immediately to usb

    the blackra1n logo SHOULD appear in less than a minute…wait for reboot.

    Will definitely be donating 😉

We need some better instructions here — I have tried this three times and ended up doing a complete restore each time — I have followed the instructions here to a T — should we be in itunes when we run blackra1n? I have set the compatibilty mode and still just hangs at the recovery mode prompt.

  37. Dont install Icy. Thats what srcrewed mine up. I’m not sure about the rock program though. But if you just install Cydia you should be fine.

  38. So when I tunes asking for restore , we do not need restore it just wait?
    I can’t restore anyway because my iphone has backup on my Mac. I’m still waiting 2 minutes already left. Will see.

  39. If u stuck in itunes usb connection or watever it is, just try it again,again & again until it works (mine works in 4th try) with itunes ALWAYS CLOSE. If u’re using vista, no need to enable compatiblity with windows xp, just run it. If blackra1n works, it should done in less than 1 minutes & iphone reboot itself. Run blackra1n in iphone and install cydia or rock or icy (make sure u enable wifi or your 3g before run it). That’s it, iphone jailbroke and u dont have to restore from backup, your data and everything are still there!!

    3, I tunes will ask for recovery,
    And than what? Close Itunes? How long need to wait ? Blackra1n still running after 15 minutes!!!

  43. Here is what the article fails to mention for Vista:

    1. Before you run blackrain place it into your C: drive ( C:/)
    2. Go to task manager and end the Itunes help process
    3. Run the app as admin

    it works!

  45. Ok. Fifth try is a charm. It kept hanging on the USB link to iTunes screen. Here’s what I did.

    Shut down iTunes
    I unplugged iPhone with USB link to iTunes screen STILL showing.
    with iPhone unhooked I restarted blackra1n. It processed and stopped at “waiting for phone”.
    I rebooted phone and while rebooting plugged it back in.
    Once the reboot was done blackra1n processed almost immediately with GEOHOTs picture showing on phone immediately.

    Everything from there went as planned.

  47. Im running a Iphone 3G with 3.1.2 installed on Windows. I have iTunes v 9.0.1.8 installed. Everytime I run Blackra1n my iPhone boots into recovery mode and then just stays there whilst the Blackra1n says “running”. Literally nothing happens. I have to do a reset with the power on and home button and then there is nothing. Any advice??

  48. I dont knoiw how much of a difference this will make for anybody else, but it was NOT working for me and then I simply made sure iTunes was closed while hitting the make it ra1n button. worked like a charm after that.
