Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  20. Hi
I jailbroke my iPhone, but i have problem when restart the phone, it ask me to connect to iTunes and then full reinstall again? any reason why this is happening

  21. i also waited for a long time and nothing happend. blackra1n says entering recovery, the iphone says connect to i tunes recovery mode. itunes says i have to restore the phone… any ideas?

  22. just plug in your iPod back in the computer and run blackra1n again then simply unplug it and just wait for the reboot and it is done

  23. I just ran blackrain, everything went fine. I'm now trying to upload some apps to my iphone that I downloaded by using Itunes. They wont load to my ipod touch at all, Itunes gives an Unkown error. My thinking is that maybe the jailbreak isnt working. Is there something I'm missing? I ran blackrain, it went through the whole process, ipod restarted, I've got blackrain as an app now. Is that it? Also, what is Cydia for? If you have any ideas, please throw me an email, bigal@rockmylogo.com

  24. When you restarted your iPhone and it had the cable & itunes signs (pictures)?
Problem = your phone is currently unlock
Solution = execute “blackra1n” again (hooking up your iPhone to your computer and run the program again).

If problem still persist then you need to restore your phone from itunes “again”. Youtube has couple videos showing in details on how to unlock iPhone.

  26. i ot the same problem, i did blackra1n before more than 10 times with my friends but with this brand new iphone is going crazy…

  27. Hi,

I have found the following on Blackra1n.com:

“If your ipt2/3GS/ipt3 is rebooting into recovery after running blackra1n, this isn’t a bug. It’s a feature. You need to run blackra1n every time to boot it. This ‘feature’, called tethered jailbreak, is enabled by upgrades Apple made to the bootrom and the fact ipt3 uses nand flash.”

    I had the same “problem”.

    Best regards

  28. I have had the same issue for days now. I have tried using Pwnage tool 3.1.4 but just get error 1600, 1604 or 2001.

I saw blackra1n and thought sweet! Quick fix but no luck.. I've never managed to get it to an image of GeoHot. It just goes straight to recovery mode. I'm running a mac on os x

  29. I assume it went into recovery mode after rebooting. This will happen every time the jailbroken phone reboots. It is a feature of blackra1n to allow you to easily restore the phone back to the original settings. To get it out of restore mode, run blackra1n with the iPhone tethered to the computer and it should show the Frodo-looking dude and boot right up. If your battery dies or you turn your phone off you will need to do this as it will enter recovery mode whenever booting.

  30. Hi,
I have AT&T service. I have the same problem and lock up 1 of the clip on youtube and it said that problem is normal and hopefully will be fixed later. I have another iphone 3gs and it works fine after jailbreak. If everytime I turn off and on and have to hook up with the computer and run blackra1n is too much.
Anybody know a solution to fix that?

    Thanks.

  31. I have the same problem… Help, please! I did the jailbreak/unlock so that I can use a different SIM card when I travel internationally. The jailbreak/unlock works fine (I can change SIM cards and use a different carrier), but I need my WiFi more than I need the unlock!
