Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  14. My iphone was already updated 3.1.2 so I decided to run blackrain straight away when I found about this jailbreak. On first try it froze on ' Entering recovery' on blackrain. So, I thought I was in fault for not restoring the phone. Second try, I restored the iphone and retried but outcome is still same. Any suggestions?

  15. Awesome….Had to do the same thing. Restore -> Close/Kill iTunes -> Move blackra1n to C: and 'Run as Administrator'

  17. ok so it didn't work for me 🙁 can you give me some tips? I did install itunes 9 and my software is 3.1.2, and i clicked make it rain and then my iphone just went to the plug into itunes screen. I hadd to restore my iphone and so on :,( this is really troubleing.. any tips???

    Have u trying Recovering your iphone first.
    Then try to get your update.

Get Apples Itunes update, if u already have that Restore It once More. if This Continues it might Be cpu id see what my virtual mem is pumping if not i believe it said in the tutorial if u running windows 7 or vista to run it on windows xp based option so no error should occur, this should be under the properties after right clicking on blackra1n.exe under compatibility First box Named Compatibility mode select “run this program in compatibility mode for:
    in the drop down list select windows XP (service pack 3) Hope this helps

  21. When i click on “make it rain” it connects to the device and says entering recovery mode and automatically opens ITUNES. Once iTunes opens it says iphone is currently in recovery mode and cannot proceed until a restore is complete. How do i get around this – or not have itunes open automatically when i click on “Make It rain” any suggestions?

Thanks for reply, yes I made it compatible before I started the process and I tried restoring it a few times, tried restarting computer(just incase), monitored CPU usage aswell, it's all pretty normal. Virtual memory stays on 0% no changes what so ever. Oh and I did update it infact everytime I press it asks me weather I want update or not. Normally I can work things out but in this situation am pretty clueless due to recent sho sha with the updates etc etc. Am not sure weather its blackrain/computer or iphone acting up. It seems all normal though. After clicking on make it rain it does send phone in to recovery mode but it stays there for a very long time with no progress. I get tempted to wait but then again process should take 30 seconds as it says above hmm

    1. im upgrade to 3.1.2
    2. i using blackra1n and iphone restore mode.. (usb pic –> itunes logo..) im waiting -+30 min, but nothing happen.. i sear more again in google how to jailbreak use blackra1n, its say.. turn off first itunes… at my taskbar no itunes on… but i see with task manager.. itunes running…maybe its problem my iphone freeze… im end task the itunes.. cannot turn off…

    im try it.. restart the PC.. grrrrrrr.. now my iphone still frezee.. with display usb pic & itune logos…

    any1 can help me.. please.. what happen with my iphone..? can ON more..? or can DIE FOREVER..?

  34. Plug your phone in and click “make it ra1n” on blackra1n again. It worked for mine. I had the same problem.

  37. I got my iPhone jailbroken, but when I download winterboard and reboot my device it enters recovery mode and I have to restore and re-jailbreak it again. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix that where I can download winterboard?

  38. Had the same thing happen to me. I unhooked from computer, did a reset (pwr + home for 10 seconds). When it came up, I let it back up with iturds, closed iTurds and then ran the V2 of blackra1n. Worked like a champ 🙂

  40. I got my iPhone jailbroken, but when I download winterboard and reboot my device it enters recovery mode and I have to restore and re-jailbreak it again. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix that where I can download winterboard?

  44. Same case… jailbreaking was fine but when I reboot iphone it goes into recovery mode and I have to rain it again every time. Any solution????

  45. Jailbreaking was successful.. but when I reboot iphone it always goes into recovery mode… everytime i have to “make it rain” to get it out of recovery mode… any fix for this????

  46. Also after jailbreaking battery drains very fast… about 1% for every 6-7min. I wonder what might be causing it… any suggestions????

  47. I can never get past the “running…” part of the blackra1n screen and my phone has the itunes logo and the cable telling me to plug it in (it already is). I've let it sit there for over 30 minutes with no change.

  48. hey man, i think i found the solution to the rebooting problem, your iPhone is “tethered” to blackra1n, if you will, and it requires you to run blackra1n upon rebooting every time. You just run blackra1n and plug your phone up. Hope this helped man, I've been pissed at mine for like 18 hours ha ha.

  50. selct the iphone in itunes. There is a little tick box, uncheck “open itunes automatically”
