Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. just disconect and hold the home and power button to reboot.. it will bring you back to life.. keep trying.. from what i read, the 3G has some issues where you have to manually hold down the home and power button kinda like you did with the quickpwn jailbreak..

  2. Yes just do the restore thru itunes, mine took two attemps but restored after that. I will try and put it in XP mode and see if that will work. If it does then I will post the results to you.

  3. ok wtf??? i did this with my iphone and it shows on my iphone cnet to itunes. and i tried to restore it and it said could not be restored. and now my iphone wont cnet to itunes???? whats going on??

  5. I've been messing with this for 3 hours now. It just dosn't work. Running windows xp, iphone 3g 3.1.2 I've done the restore, started the blackra1n phase, it goes through the process, reboot and all but blackra1n never shows up as an app on my phone. Done whole process 9 times now. no luck!! it just doesn't work. a wate of time.

  8. hold down home and power untile reboot- before you run blackra1n again- turn off Bonjour service in services- I did this after 30 tries and it worked in like 30 seconds

  9. after reading and reading and reading many different sites- and 30 tries at jailbreaking the tricked that finally worked was stopping the Bonjour service in services- after I did that my blackra1n jailbreak worked in 30 seconds

  11. i would laugh at you but seriouly man, ive tried to follow the directions to the t and no luck. ive tried with and without itunes running….all sorts of options aside from the directions. so please, if you feel like being a WISEASS, then please do so and inform us of what makes your process so special.

  15. Man im having problems also.. I have 3.12 os replacement phone.. I had a 3.0 b4..
    Im trying to jalbreak with this blackrain and it just says finding – iphone and once it puts it in dfu mode it just stays there and says running continuesly… i have bonjour servce turned off and I have ipod helper turned off just in case…im running windows 7 in xp svc pack 2 compatibility mode and like I said black rain just says running… and nothing happens on my phone.. can someone please help me .. I would really appreciate.. thanks Guys….Abe

  16. you can only jailbreak with blackrain not unlock, if you are on ATT you can't unlock but may be able to jailbreak. Blackrain is the best I have ever used to jailbreak iphonne whether its a 2G or 3G or 3Gs. It worked great on my iPh one 3Gs with 3.1.2 and it works just fine… I'm having fun with my jailbroken 3Gs … BTW Blackrain is for windowns only I guess and absolutely great jailbreaking with it..

  20. managed to jailbreak 3.1.2 on iphone 3g, used blackrain and when trying to install cydia ,the internet connection wont connect, manage to connect via wifi, but no other way, even safari wont connect
    error msg: “Domain=NSURLEErrorDomain Code=-1009 UserInfo=0x125640 “no internet conection””

  23. For those on Mac trying this and having problems with it going to the sync screen. Run blackra1n with iTunes closed. It wouldn’t work for me till I tried to do with iTunes closed. Then it worked flawlessly.

  26. i had the same problem but like a few other ppl who have posted before i persevered. i restored to stock 3.1.2 and activated phone. Then rebooted phone again closed all itunes software and services and ran blackra1n. it did not detect the phone so i put into recovery mode myself and plugged it back in.. ran blackra1n again this time it went straight into uplaoding the jailbk software.. keep trying it took me over 15 attempts to get it to work.

  29. Install sbsettings, enable the edge icon and switch edge on, that did it for me. I had the same problem, wifi worked fine, G3 and GPRS seemed connected, but no traffic with safari or Cydia etc….

  32. I am so lost. I have iPhone 3.1.2, Windows PC. I want what I (thought I) was promised: ability to use my iPhone like an air card, i.e., internet tethering. My iPhone is not jailbroken or unlocked. Everything is straight up – the way it came. So here are the questions: (1) How do I back it up before I take any of these steps? (2) What happens if (when, really) it needs service? (3) Jailbreak first, then unlock, right? Then what? In brief, how do I get from where I am to where I need to be, and still keep warranty/service agreements intact. Much obliged for any guidance.

  33. oh man i dont know much about iphones and all that..but i had my iphone working perfectly fine..untill i upgrated the phone with itunes..and i didnt take any precautions now my phone doesnt work and all the stuff like cydia are gone..now the phone its block. is there any way i can still unlock the iphone?..they say its almost impossible but you not impossible.. please help!!! they say its a way to jailbreak..and also downgrade from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08 so than it woould be able to function again..really confused please help..

  36. For all the people who keep having it get stuck at the USB -> iTunes screen… it's all about the timing. I have successfully done it 3 times now:

    I have an iPhone 3G and I'm on Windows XP

    STEPS:

    0. Use a computer that has iTunes installed. Otherwise blackra1n won't work
    1. Stop iTunes from automatically syncing with your device (or all devices, in settings)
    2. Plug in your phone if it isn't already, put it in Airplane mode, then turn it off
    3. Close iTunes if it's open. Ctrl+Alt+Del and close any of these that might be there: “ituneshelper.exe” “iPodservice.exe” and “mDNSresponder.exe”
    4. Download blackra1n (from blackra1n.com) and put it on C: by itself, no folders so that it's at C:blackra1n.exe (or if you already have it, then move it there)
    5. Run blackra1n.exe, click make it rain… it will say it's waiting for phone
    6. Now with your phone plugged into USB but turned off, press and hold down the power button AND the home button at the same time… give it like 5-10 seconds, keep holding
    7. If you do it right, it will come up with the Apple logo then flash the image of geohot
    8. If you don't get it right, it will come up with the Apple logo and then the USB -> iTunes screen… if you get that, that's okay- totally fine. Just close blackra1n, then hold down power AND home button at the same time until your phone turns off. Then try again starting at step 5….

    That's been my experience after reading tonnes and tonnes of blogs I got something that worked for me, hope it works for you!

  37. Hi. I have a big problem. I have jailbreaked my phone many times. Now when i used blacktra1n my iphone 2G is now broken.

    when the phone reboots after using blacktra1in it says:

    “Slide for emergency” at the slider. AND “insert sim-card to unlock”

    So now iam stuck, what to do?, is there something to do? Did as your guide says. Even Saurik said this, “just donwload from itunes and then use blacktra1n”.

    So GOD help.

    the jailbreak, instalous and all
    exept winterboard
    it did not work, whenever i tryed to install it i had to reboot my ipod touch (newest one 3.1.2 update) and then i would have to re-jailbreak my ipod and re install all the apps that i like, which take pretty long, for the big ones.
    why cant i make winterboard work?

  41. I have just used Black Ra1n to jailbreak my Iphone 3G. I also installed Cydia to get all the games and apps(3rd party) but what do i need to do to go on torrets sites and install thoses apps or games? can someone plz tell me how i can do that.

  44. Doesnt work for me… I am on Windows Vista, iphone 3G 16GB, 3.1.2 baseband 05.11.07. Followed the instructions with blackra1n RC2 too but stuck on the same screen of itunes + USB.

  49. This worked for me. OS X blackra1n. Thanks very much! I had used pwnagetool, and bricked my 1 day old 3gs after breaking my 3g (left on car) the day before. Got it to finally come out of DFU mode by restoring official 3.1.2 using iTunes. Was getting 1600 errors non stop, and no screen, no apple, no iTunes logo, no nothing. Just black no matter what. So when I tried blackra1n and it wanted to restore again, I was less than happy till I found this post. Much appreciated Teagan!

  50. I tried this and it ended up fucking up my fone. It wouldn't let me restore it it just gave me an error I had to get a replacement fone. I don't recomend this
