Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. Hi AL W, I have the same problem with the USB-iTune Logo showing on my iPhone screen. What happened was I ignorantly updated my initially jailbroken/unlocked iPhone 3G, via iTune. Pls let me know if you've found a solution…

  3. I have tried this several times, but it does not work. I have done a complete restore using the 3.1.2 from iTunes, and then restated my pc, closed all apps except for the firefox page with instructions, and run Blackra1n. The timer appears on the iPhone only to shutdown and then restart with the iTunes logo and the USB adapter image and just sits there with the Blackra1n in running mode. Itunes notifies that the iPhone is connected and must have a restore before being used! It does not restart with the GeoHot image at all. If I hold bot the power and other button to shutdown, and then the power button to start, it goes back to normal startup with one of the app icons moved.

  4. If you are on T-Mobile do not jailbrake it with blackr1n! I order to do that you would have to upgrade to 3.1.2 but that WILL lock your iphone for att and so far (as far as i know there is not unlock), so either wait or use different tool!

  13. WTF this just broke my ipod! i followed instructions and it got to “done, wait for reboot” now my ipod wont turn back on. PLEASE HELP ASAP as i just bought my ipod and i am freaking out!!!!!!

  15. lol have you made sure it is the firmware from itunes? And look in your blackra1n notepad it might tell you somethings wrong ie your usb isnt plugged in properly.

  22. Doing this on Win7, it I would get the same errors (iTunes logo and USB adapter image, and it would just sit there). What worked for me is, closing iTunes first, then running blackra1n in admin mode (XP compatibility mode not on as original instructions suggested). After I hit “make it ra1n”, the phone rebooted, and then the geohot image appeared instead of the standard iTunes/USB recovery image. iTunes also opened up with the same error message of needing to restore, but I just closed itunes and waited for blackra1n to finish and reboot. If I need to do this again, maybe I’ll uncheck the option to automatically sync when phone is connected so that iTunes doesn’t open each time the phone reboots.

  23. Wow works a treat, soon after downloaded MyWi from Rock, and wham Internet Tethering is back and working since I lost it by updating to 3.1.

    Took seconds on iPhone 3GS 32GB running standard Apple 3.1.2 firmware (no unlocks or previous jailbreaks).

  24. All understood but the quarry is, will it jail break an iphone 3GS which is now at 3.1 upgraded from 3.0.1. Now it is in firmware 05.11.07. I can downgrade it and get it to DFU mode but i have never previously jail broken it. I am a windows user. It is written if i get an custom iphone 3G ipsw from some where but which one of the custom ipsw coz there are different versions in it. Service provider is O2. Plz guide

    plug iphone back in

    click make it ra1n!!

  29. Yeah, I am wondering the same thing. I rebooted my phone and is showing just a usb cable and a arrow pointing up to iTuneson the iphone. The blackra1n app just says running grayed out. It's been at least 10 min now. Do I still wait?

  32. iv managed to download blackra1n and cydia on my phone exactly how it says above but none of my apps will sync with my phone…anyone got any ideas plz???
    im really confused cos iv tried everythin people have said…even reinstalling blackra1n which went on the phone without any problems again but still no joy with the apps 🙁 …

  36. Wow, I tried for 2 hours using vista and it didn't work. I tried on my computer with xp and it worked the first time. Maybe you have to change the compatibility to xp for it to work.

  37. To synch your apps you need to download appsync from cydia… Jailbreaking lets you use third party apps NOT cracked apps, for that you need appsync.
    Google it 🙂

  42. If the iTouch goes to a black screen and does not do anything then most likely you have a 3rd Generation (newest) iTouch and it has not been hacked yet.
