Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. 1-Run the blackra1n (iTunes and iTunes helper must be closed)
    2-Push the make it rain
    3- When the iphone was rebooting close the blackra1n
    4- Wait until the apple appears on the screen and run the blackra1n again
    5- Push the make it rain (even if the usb cable and iTunes symbol appears on the screen)
    6- Jailbrake will began ant the phone will be reboot.
    7- After reboot blackra1n icon will be appear on the screen.

  2. i read all of the comments and decided to write again, since i sort of have a seniority ( i discovered this hack when it was just posted and there were no comments at all left), guys, it seems to me that there is nothing can help or not… you just try and it will work, when my was cracked i did nothing from list of others suggestions ( youtube and such). Home button and power button were my friends as well as shutting down itunes, changing cables and usb ports, different machines and … start all over, and finally when i just tried for the (last time) it worked!!! keep trying!

  4. how long does it usually take to reboot? i tried jailbreaking it twice, and both times it got suck in a black screen while rebooting, but when hold lock+home together, it goes back to my normal iphone, everythings there

    Note: It will always fail the first time and stay in the iTunes USB Screen.
    Note: This for for Vista Home Premium 64-bit Users
    Note: This is with firmware 3.1.2 with 5.11.07 baseband preinstalled.

    1. Print these instructions as your PC will be turned off soon.

    2. Right-click the Internet Explorer and choose Run As Administrator

    3. Download BlackRa1n to your C Drive.

    4. DO NOT Run in Compatability Mode with Windows XP (other people have made this fatal error).

    5. Put your iPhone on Airplane Mode (This is Vital).

    6. Have your iPhone on and plug it into your PC.

    7. Restore your iPhone (Not Restore & Update) to Version 3.1.2 by holding Shift and clicking Restore and choosing the IPSW file for 3.1.2.

    8. Open My Computer, Right-Click the C-Drive, Choose Properties, Click “Disk CleanpuP,” Choose Files from All Users, Wait 2 minutes, Check all Boxes, Delete Files.

    9. When the iPhone finishes restoring and takes you to the iTunes page, Decline the Update, Choose Setup as New Phone, Do not Restore, Uncheck Sync boxes, Click Done.

    10. Wait 60 seconds for the iPhone to activate itself (just be patient damnit).

    11. Restart your Computer.

    12. Upon reboot, open iTunes and make sure iTunes detects the iPhone. Uncheck auto-sync on the iPhone screen and also click Edit>Preference>Devices Tab>Check the Box Saying not to sync

    13. Close iTunes

    14. Right click the bottom task bar and choose “Task Manager,” then on the bottom-left click “Show processes from all users, then close everything except AppleDeviceServices.

    15. Make sure your iPhone is still in Airplane Mode.

    16. Right-click Blackra1n and choose “Run As Administrator,” and when it open click on the “Make it Rain” button.

    17. Some people have said this does it. If it doesn't, worry. *** Others have had to complete the next few steps to get it.

    18. This will fail evidenced by the iTunes USB Screen that doesn't change.

    19. Hold both power and home until it reboots. When you see the Apple logo release both buttons and leave it alone.

    20. It should go back to its original state.

    21. Close Blackra1n and all open windows.

    22. Re-open Blackra1n as Administator.

    23. Click “Make it RA1N.

    24. As sooon as the iPhone powers down in response, hold both the power button and home button. When the Apple logo appears, release the power button but continue
    holding the home button until you see Frodo.

    25. YOU'RE DONE.

  11. i tried to jailbreak using blackrain.. but the process was stuck at waiting to reboot where i see a black screen. How do i resolve it? i am using windows XP

  15. with regards to step 14. Did you mean close “everything” or just everything apple related? as i'm not sure you can actually close “everything”

  16. So I'm stuck in Recovery Mode! I ran blackrain and it took awhile so disconnected and tryed again! Then Xp windows comes up saying recover mode and I canceled. Since that point it's been stuck! I've tried holding down the power and home key but iTunes won't see the iphone to recover. Please HELP!

  18. Did you run blackra1n on a jailbroken iphone 3gs 3.01 firmware (updating to 3.12 with custom firmware)? If so, did it keep the old baseband 4.26.08? If so, were you able to re-unlock with the ultrasn0w via Cydia and the repo666?

  20. Hey dude i restored my 3gs using itunes , bt wen it gt restored , it shows tht “USB-ITUNES” thing with a “NO SIM CARD” sign on th top it it !!!! And i can only go fr “EMERGENCY CALLS” …… nothing else , cant even open it (remember i haven't jailbroken it yet) ….. Is this alright ???? HELP HELP HELP !!!!!

  21. Hi. Blackra1n works very good. The bad thing about it, it good if you have AT&T. It does not unlock your phone at all. So be careful! it will give you cydia. If you on T-mobile don't use blackra1n at`all. Blackra1n won't unlock your phone. Blackra1n won't work with custom firmware, I try it and it didn't work at all. The pwnage tool will unlock the 3gs. It out for the mac but not for pc. Blackra1n use iTune original firmware, so be careful!! The baseband will go up and your phone will be lock. If you read the top of this page, it said blackra1n won't unlock your phone, it just give you cydia.

  23. Make sure you download iTune original firmware. Your baseband is going up, so be careful. If you have AT&T then use blackra1n, if you have T-mobile don't use Blackra1n at all!! Do you have AT&T? Don't use custom firmware with Blackra1n it won't work. I have window xp and it worked fine. Make sure when you use Blackra1n that iTune is close. Try holding both the power and home key. Then let go the power, but still hold down the home key and then plug in the USB to your pc. iTune should go on and say your phone is on recovery mode. Hit me off, if it work for you. There's more tricks to fix that. So don't worry your phone is still good. Are you using iTune 9? I will give you more infor later to help you with your phone.

  24. To all iphone owners!!!!! Blackra1n don't unlock the iphone at all.
    To unlock your iphone please use pwnage tool. You can learn more there. Blackra1n just give cydia software it won't unlock your phone:( It works good if you have AT&T. DON'T USE IT IF YOU HAVE T-MOBILE!!!!!
    or your phone is going to be lock.

  27. any one can tell me i do have iphone 3g with firmware 3.0.1 and i wiould like to upgrade to 3.1.2 without locking/unjailbreacking again any one can help with that?

  28. So for those wondering what the IPSW file is, john is talking about the firmware update 3.1.2 as a file.

    I followed john's step's more or less I skipped some basically 9-14, I restored my backup to the phone and then proceeded, but do make sure you keep your phone in airplane mode.

    So I installed Cydia and then Icy, do not install them together unless you like problems. Now should I uninstall Blackra1n? Also if I sync to my computer will it erase cydia and icy?

Ok, I have a Iphone 3G, I tried this, and all it did was, restart my phone, come up with Itunes usb connection logo, and then once i connected it, it was like getting my phone set up all over again, it completely restored it, no apps, no pictures, no contacts, but luckily i backed it up before i did it. There has to be a way to jailbreak it, any help?

    Good luck. If any body don't know the code for cydia. Then there will never have all the good stuff from cydia. I have all the codes for cydia.
    I'm not new to this at all. I been doing this since the first itouch came out. If people want to learn more about cydia, check out YouTube. They will give out some codes for cydia, but not all. Cydia also have a web site with some code to add on. Good luck to all. Be careful what you download from cydia. Not all are good. Some may damage your phone too. 

  41. So, I downloaded the blackra1n software, updated and synced my iPod touch (3.1.2 firmware already previously installed). Once I ran the blackra1n software, my iPod started doing a loading thing with the blackra1n background. However, now it's stuck on a black screen, and it won't turn on… it's been about 20 minutes now, and nothing's happened….

    Can anybody give me some feedback at all?

    I'm not sure if this software is for what I need. I might sound dumb, but when it comes down to finding a program that i can trust to make it work, I'm both picky and dumb.
    Either way, I want know if this program is the one need to fix my issue which is that I can't run any of my applications until i get the 3.1.2 upgrade. My phone isn't for AT&T, but for T-mobile, so what do you recommend I do?

    Please let me know, not having any functioning Apps is very frustrating.

  46. lol ok if youre on iphone 3G,3GS i can help you. First you need 3.1.2 firmware on your iphone. Download blackra1n for your OS. Then making sure iTunes is open and youre iphone is plugged in click let it ra1n. The rest is simple. After it restarts a picture of geohot with iphones will come up. Once it turns on again you will have a blackra1n icon. Click on it and install your preferred installer. Bon Appetite
