Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  12. for all those saying it wont work and u keep getting stuck on the itunes sync screen on ur iphone/itouch, jus keep trying, took me 3 times but it finally worked on the 3rd try..

  14. Hi,
I have a 3Gs I JB it in August 2009 but when the itunes 9 came I got 3.1.2 accidently and now am locked again, I have done allllllllll that u say, again & again, it has all, I mean Cydia, but still it is searching for network and I cant make any calls, need some realy HELP pllllllzzzzzzzzzz

  15. I have trie this several times now and the phone keeps going to connect to itunes logo. I have tried every usb port that I have and multiple combinations. Still nothing. The worst part is that to get my stuff back I have to wait and hour while doing a full sync. I will keep trying.

  16. If your iphone sticks on the itunes sync screen simply pull the usb cable out and plug it back in. It will then continue.

  17. Not working for my iPhone 3G either. WHere is the developer of this program and why wont they assist those having trouble?

  18. Okay, finally after about 20 tries I got it done. Here is the list of what I did that finally worked. I was getting stuck in recovery mode and couldn't go any further. When I moved Blackra1n to the root of the c drive it started running but would stick there.

Move Blackra1n to the root c drive:

    Restart computer:

Start task manager and then go into processes:

Right click and disable anything that has to do with itunes-this will prevent itunes from loading.

restart iphone and put in airplane mode:

Right click Blackra1n.exe and select run as administrator:

Connect iphone to computer and make it rain.

This was the sequence that I followed that finally worked on my 16g 3g with 3.1.2 that had never been jailbroke. I am using Vista home premium on my computer.

    I hope this post helps.

  19. Am using an unlocked IPhone 3GS. If the mentioned method doesn't work, try the below:

start iphone (with OS 3.1.2) and close itunes when it opens.
    Use task manager and rightclick:
ipodservice.exe and select end process tree
    same with itunes.exe
    end these two processes also:
    ituneshelper.exe
    mdnsresponder.exe

unplugg usb-cable, and turn off your iphone, press and hold homebutton while inserting usb-cable, keep holding home-button and the recovery image displays (itunes icon with a usb-cable)
    COPY blackra1n into C:Root Drive
open blackra1n and press “make it ra1n”
wait a while and you should see a dude 😉
keep wait and your phone reboots. open the new blackrain icon on your springboard and install cydia. Done

WORKS perfectly for me after hours of trying and restoring

  20. Tried to use this, my phone got stuck in recovery mode and didn't come out. I could restart my phone to get it to work again, but blackra1n wasn't installed on it. This has happened several times. Any ideas?

  21. If you are getting stuck on the Recovery mode Tut!*
1:Press and hold both the Lock and Home buttons. (This should shut your Iphone/itouch down. Also it should have fixed the recovery mode.If not Repeat.)
    2:Turn your Iphone/itouch back on.
3: Connect your Iphone/itouch to your computer.
4: When your Iphone/itouch connects. Itunes should pop up.
5: Make sure your Iphone/itouch's name apears in itunes.
6: Eject your Iphone/itouch on Itunes.
7: While Itunes is still up Run BlackRa1n and than press “Make is Ra1n”
8: After it resets close itunes before it has a chance to find it.
9: It should work and give you a message about being hacked.

    *Note:
This can take a few trys.
Lock and Home shutdown becomes your best friend.

    Hope this helps.

  22. finally it worked,38 trys, I had to restore a few times and then uninstall and reinstall itunes to the 9.0 version then it worked perfectly, TY for the great job you have done.

  23. This worked for me dannie69…

I noticed it locks up when you load it from your desktop, when it gets to the “Entering Recovery” as well. Holding home and power dont seem to restart it. The only trick I found for getting out of that situation and not having to do an entire restore is to open the blackrain site. When you click load on the windows logo, then start the “Make it Rain” or whatever. It will flicker and say running… after you do that you can do the Home and Power for 10 seconds and it restarts to normal. Sometimes you need to power it back on. Im beginning to think this does not work with Iphone 3G at all. Only 3Gs and other touch users are having success from the feedback i’ve read.

Please be more informative with your feedback people! Mention the friggin’ phone, firmware, etc…. But as of now this DOES NOT work with 3G.

  24. we went into itunes and restored the setting to the phone and since ur stuff is backed up on itunes it will give all ur stuff back to u.

  25. What happened to me was, I went to the Dev-Team's blog, and got all excited when I saw the “Jailbreak iphone 3.1.2” so of course I wen't to download black rain, I opened up itunes, and backed up my phone (just in case), then I left open Itunes, wen't to the let it ra1n button, and pressed it, nothing worked, it almost automatically restored my phone, to the part where all my apps were deleted, because I'm guessing itunes detected the let it ra1n thing, and just cut it off, and sent me to Itunes USB mode. Thank God I had Itunes say “An old phone has been recently updated, Would you like to restore to this state?” and i got everything back, but no jailbreak. :/

  26. Guys I am in so much trouble. Please help. I am stuck on step 10.
I am really worried. I don't want to lose all my contacts and SMS history.

    * Should I click restore or sync?
    * After the restore iTunes did not ask me if I want to back up from my old phone.
    * In iTunes, if I right click the phone icon on the left pane, it just says “BACK UP” and not “Restore from backup”.
    * Should I click Sync? Please Help.
