Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  14. Blackra1n for Windows or Mac DOES NOT WORK for iPhone 3G 8GB running 3.1.2. I’ve tried 50 times, different ways, to no avail – iPhone will always hang on factory DFU mode screen while Blackra1n also hangs at the same time.

    Seeing that this particular iPhone is one of the most common, this is a huge problem and I’m surprised no one is talking about it yet. Someone please prove me wrong – any fixes?

  16. art, never ever pay for jailbreak software, your getting ripped off if you do because all your paying for is someone elses freeware, like blackra1n and pwnagetools…second, 3G requires that your in airplane mode to jailbreak(dont ask why, thats just how it is) 3GS should be fine…no problems
    and your a shrink, that means psychologist or psychiatrist?

  19. thanks for the reply. i just tried blackra1n, nothing really happened,there was plug on my iphone screen and it just said running after clinck let it rain?? It sat for about 5mins than i disconnected. I’m running visat, any tips you can give me would be great. can i kill my phone by doing this?

  20. Hmm…I've tried everything I've thought of, like turning off all itunes services, processes, 3G in airplane mode, blackra1n in windows xp compatibility mode, putting blackra1n in c:/ drive root, that's basically all I've tried. Is there anything else I should be doing?

  21. I tried over and over on my 3g like everyone else with no luck. Since I had restored everything it was trying to activate my phone and that said done this last time before I tired blackra1n and I also put it on airplane mode. Not sure if either of those things helped but it worked instantly after that.

  31. Been messing about with my 3G 8gb for about half an hour trying to jailbreak it lol.. followed everyones suggestions and nothing worked… THEN i cracked it…
    Do all the update stuff first then unplug your iphone and reboot it. compatibility mode your blackra1n, RUN blackra1n and click “make it rain”… THEN and only then plug your iphone back into the computer… was over and done in 30 seconds, popped up wit the message telling me my iphone would be jailbroken once it had reboot and the image of the curly haired lad with the wave of iphones popped onto the screen… it rebooted and now its done.

    This may sound crazy but, it took me a couple days as I had given up. Only thing I did differently this time was plug my usb cable into the back of the computer. Ran blackra1n, rebooted and ran again… It worked within 20 seconds…

  34. OK you NOOBS plug in your phone and the make sure itunes is not lunched then run blackra1n click the jailbraeck button your phone should go into recovery mode and at this point itunes will start so go ahead and click on restore but dont turn blackra1n of and let the phone do its thing….. 8-

    My iPod Touch 1G is currently jailbroken on 3.1.1
    It says that “blackra1n” jailbreaks for all iPhones and iPod Touches EXCEPT 1G, is that true?
    And PwnageTool is only Mac i think, so how do i update to 3.1.2 while keeping my cracked apps?

  47. I have iphone 3gs with 3.12 and firmware 05.11.07

    I am using blackra1n on C: drive on Vista with compatibility for XP service pack 2 and right click to run as administrator

    When i click on make it rain, the box comes up ‘entering recovery’ and the connect to itunes logo comes up on iphone.

    This is the way it stays and if i hold power and home, it keeps coming up on itunes logo and if i connect to itunes it says its in recovery mode

    Any ideas

  50. I've now tried this several times. Phone goes into restore mode, iTunes starts up, sync. Then iTunes is unable to restore it, “The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occured (13),” whatever that means.

    I simply cannot get blackra1n app onto the iPhone. Any other suggestions?
