Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

UPDATE: An updated version of this guide for blackra1n RC3 with blacksn0w can be found here.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  1. I have install cydia and I add source but after install it my iphone can't find network carrier and I see this message UNABLE TO LOAD NETWORK LIST
    how can I do?

  2. Can any one please help me, i am desperate, I've tried EVERYTHING! I called apple, went to get a new phone out of the box, 3g 8gig,l came home and… nothing it just sits there with usb and itunes logo on the screen. Please, please some one reply, my e mail is arteyzips@yahoo.com. My software is 3.1.2 and it looks exactly as it does on picture above the instruction.

  3. i have the same problem… every 3g i have all 3 of them… no one seemed to know it, lots of comments but nothing helps…

  4. I just used blackrain without installing the 3.1.2 software (I left it at 3.1) and it worked. The only problem that I have is that Cydia is having an issue and won't update and has an error on the screen that tells me to uninstall icy to fix the error. I haven't done that yet, but Icy and Rock seem to be working fine. This is a friend's phone, so when he gets back, I'm going to “restore” to 3.1.2 (I downloaded the firmware but I haven't installed it yet) and re-do his jailbreak to see if that fixes the issues. It may not even be an issue with 3.1, it may just be that Cydia is conflicting with Icy somehow, as the message states, but I'm going to try it the way it's posted just to make sure. Has anyone else run into this issue?

  5. Hold down the power and home keys for about 30 seconds (maybe more) until it restarts. It will restart fine.

  6. does tethering on unofficial telcos work after JB using blackra1n? if so, i am interested 🙂

  7. Guys, I've been following your comments on this site and many others websites.
I have few general suggestions for those of you still having problems with blackra1n.

    1. Blackra1n jailbreaks ONLY 3.1.2 firmware.
    2. Close iTunes before running Blackra1n.
    3. Disable your anti-virus. MacAfee users uninstall and reboot your computer before using Blackra1n.
    4. Vista and Windows 7 users run Blackra1n in Windows XP compatibility mode (right click on Blackra1n, choose 'Properties', then tab 'Compatibility', check the proper box and Apply)
    5. Don't use any USB hubs.
    6. Run Blackra1n and then plug in your device, wait until it will be detected.
    7. Then click 'make it ra1n' box.
    8. Wait until your device reboot.

That's it. Blackra1n worked for me. But as many of you I had some problems in the beginning.
I hope these suggestions will help somebody.
    Cheers

  8. Thank you so much man your awsome it worked great for me! You truely are leading the way in technology!

  9. LOL don’t feel bad I was having the same problem because I was so anxious. You must click the windows logo which is above the donate.

  10. Plugged my iPhone 3G in my computer, opened iTunes 9.0.1, and updated/restored to 3.1.2. Then let it back it up. When it was done i hit “make it ra1n”
    it didnt work
    – I'am running Windows XP SP3
    – I didn't end any processes, i didn't even close iTunes
    – And i have had my iPhone 3G jailbroken when it was at 3.0 (then updated to 3.0.1 -> 3.1, and now to 3.1.2)

  11. it is beyond me why you would go get a new phone and then try the same thing again that bricked the original one…
anyways… it should reboot just fine if you hold down power and home at the same time for about 30 sec. I just tried it 3 times, and it worked the 3rd time around.

  12. when that has happened to me in the past, that's what i have done, and it restarted. i just hold down the home button and the power button until the apple appears and it restarts. i'm not 100% sure on how long it takes, so just hold them down until the apple appears. if not, i don't know what to tell you…maybe someone else can chime in.

  13. I think that I misunderstood you at first. Are you saying that you bought the iphone from apple and you don't have it “activated” with your sim card in it? if that is the case, then the itunes screen will stay there until you put an active sim card in it, I believe. I bought mine from an AT&T store and it had the itunes/usb screen on it until they activated it and put my sim card in.

  14. did u guys just closed itunes and ituneshelper after it actually restore?

dont have to do the update carrier and the profile?

  15. did that to mine, i just went back to itunes and just restored it… did this for like 5 times now… a lil bit pissed atm but still trying for the last time..

  16. no, no, it was activated with ATT sim. I called apple to complaint that mine signal was always low so they replaced it with no problem, i though ,that mine old one which had been jailbroken previously, before i acted stupidly and updated it acted up and did not want to “cooperate” with blackra1n, but the new one , out of the box is acting the same! I am very sad, I've tried every possible trick and watched through every tutorial on youtube….

  17. Just a question if something goes wrong i just have to restore my iTouch correct? I have hacked my LG Vu and there is a chance of bricking it, also hacked my wii, has a chance of bricking aswell, does the iPhone or iTouch have this possibility?

  18. were you doing ipod touch or Iphone, do you have 3.1.2 firmware? can you help me im running vista i neeed help!

  19. My3gs worked great but I have done everything that was said to do in close itunes helper, run as admin, so on and so forth. I cant seem to get my buddys iPhone 3g to do nothing. It keeps saying running in balckra1n and the phone just shows the usb and the itunes symbol…. What am I doing wrong or not doing at all? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

  20. For W7 users, and maybe this applies to vista too i dunno i never used vista, when you go into properties to “run with xp compatibility” the general tab at the bottom had a little security check mark that said “this came from another computer and has been blocked for security reasons” click unblock and voila. 15 tries before i found that and when i unblocked it it worked.

  21. i have done all the steps and blackra1n is still not on my ipod ive tryed restoring turning on and on nothing works

  22. Hey Folks lol i'm going crazy have spent the last 2 days trying to restore the phone. I ran blackra1n installed rock then clydia, once clydia rebooted, the phone never actually turns on, all i see is the apple logo, any tips how i can restore the phone lol so i can at least use it?

  23. when the iphone turns off after the blank illuminated screen goes off do u wait for it to turn on automaticaly or turn it on urself?

  24. i have tried everything people have suggested and i cannot get it to work on my iphone 3G.. it seems most people having problems are having them with the 3G and not the 3GS.. i get an error in the log saying cannot open USB. i may try using windows 7 as i have a dual boot system but as i have managed to jailbreak using a custom 3.1.2 i may just leave it as it is.

Thanks everyone for your input.. but for me it did not work

  25. uhm i have a 2G itouch and i clicked on the “let it rain” button and then the pic came up. and then after 30 secs it jsut shut down and now it doesnt turn on… can anyone help me out?

  26. i have downloaded everything and rebooted my phone for some reason i cant seem to get the blackra1n on to my actual ipod to get cydia and other apps on my ipod any suggestions

  27. george hotz you are a fuckin god, i hope you get more pussy an trees than a nudist colony in a forest.

  28. hey i dunno whats going on i tried blackrain and now my phones wont even turn on its like its dead

  29. With the older version redsnow etc. some people found that disconnecting the usb then reattaching worked. Do this if you get a blank screen when running the jailbreak software.

  30. could someone please help after installing blackrain my iphone wont turn on what do i do now?

  31. I'm using 3.1.2 Ipod touch 2g and it isn't doing anything. the blackra1n thing is just saying done waiting for reeboot. is it a manual reboot?

  32. ok heres the thing you either have it in dfu mode so hold the home and power button for atleast 10 seconds
