‘Extraordinarily Complex’ 20th-Anniversary iPhone Might Need To Be Built in China

The iPhone is coming up to its 20th anniversary in 2027, and a new report suggests that Apple will note the occasion with a new, “extraordinarily complex” design.

And while Apple is moving manufacturing away from China where possible, this device might not follow suit.

That’s according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman who, writing in his weekly Power On newsletter, says that Apple is planning some big changes to the iPhone lineup for the 2027 celebrations. He believes that the new iPhone will feature a design that is so complex that it will have to be made in China.

Gurman has previously said that Apple will launch its first foldable iPhone in 2027, while a new design for the iPhone Pro will also be offered. Now, he has claimed that the new devices will include “new parts and production techniques” that will require Apple’s Chinese manufacturing partners to be involved — rather than moving manufacturing to somewhere like India.

Apple has been working to diversify its manufacturing ever since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic caused chaos in its Chinese supply chain. Plants in India are among some of those that could potentially have picked up the future iPhone production, but that now seems unlikely.

While a new iPhone Pro is sure to be exciting, the first foldable model will no doubt capture most attention. Rumors suggest that it will be similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold lineup of devices, with a price of around $2,000 in the cards.
