Apple is reportedly working on an 18.8-inch foldable device, but there’s still debate on whether it’s meant to be an iPad Pro or a MacBook.
Recent leaks suggest a prototype is already in testing, and it even has Face ID embedded under the display.
The idea of an all-screen device leans toward an iPad, but some believe it could be a MacBook with a soft keyboard. However, for Apple to make a keyboard-less MacBook, it would need to solve three key challenges:
- Making a virtual keyboard feel comfortable
- Simulating the physical keyboard experience
- Ensuring it supports touch-typing
Apple has patents related to these solutions, but bringing them to life is another story.
Supply-chain reports have pointed to Apple’s interest in foldable notebooks, with analysts Ross Young and Ming-Chi Kuo both suggesting a 20-inch or 18.8-inch display was in development. Initially thought to be for a MacBook, more recent rumors suggest a foldable iPad Pro instead.
Leaker Digital Chat Station claims there’s now a prototype of this device featuring under-display Face ID technology. Apple has patents for this and was recently reported to have solved key technical challenges.
While the exact launch timeline remains unclear, we can be certain that Apple is serious about foldable tech.
