Apple has just released iPadOS 17.7.8, a crucial security update specifically aimed at older iPads that are no longer eligible for the latest iPadOS 18.
If you’re still using a 2017 iPad Pro (10.5-inch or 12.9-inch) or the sixth-generation iPad from 2018, this update is meant for you.
This new version comes on the heels of iPadOS 17.7.7, which Apple pulled shortly after its release. Users quickly reported an annoying issue where several App Store apps were repeatedly logging them out for no apparent reason. With 17.7.8, Apple aims to fix not just that glitch, but also a host of other behind-the-scenes security vulnerabilities.
Why is this important? Even if your iPad is a few years old, it still handles sensitive data—your emails, banking apps, personal photos, and more. This update includes fixes for memory corruption bugs, potential unauthorized access to data stored on disk, and other security loopholes that could be exploited.
Apple hasn’t detailed every single fix publicly, but the emphasis is clearly on tightening up security for devices that can’t make the jump to iPadOS 18.
To check if your device is compatible, go to Settings > General > Software Update. If you see iPadOS 17.7.8 available, it’s highly recommended that you install it right away.
And for those using newer iPads—don’t miss out on iPadOS 18.5, which includes both security updates and new features. Stay updated and stay secure!
