Apple is reportedly working on a new, lighter version of the AirPods Max headphones, although it won’t be ready to enter mass production until 2027.
That’s according to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who, in a post on the X social network, said that there may be no significant updates to the AirPods until next year.
Instead, it looks likely that all eyes will be on the AirPods Max refresh in 2027. Before that, a new camera-equipped version of AirPods will enter mass production in 2026.
AirPods may not see significant updates until 2026 (aligning with my earlier prediction that IR camera-equipped AirPods would enter mass production in 2026). A lighter version of the AirPods Max is expected to enter mass production in 2027.
Apple’s AirPods Max are currently among the heaviest headphones on the market, thanks to a weight of 386.2 grams. The use of stainless steel and aluminum is behind that heft, whereas products from Sony, Sennheiser, and others are normally made from lighter materials such as plastic.
It remains to be seen whether this claim comes to fruition, although Kuo does have a relatively strong track record when predicting what Apple’s future plans will be based on information gleaned from within the supply chain.
Apple’s current AirPods Max product was updated in September 2024, adding a USB-C port for charging and switching up the colors on offer.
