Apple Is Reportedly Working On A Rugged Apple Watch For Extreme Sports

Apple is working on a new rugged Apple Watch that’s designed for those who live a more rough and tumble lifestyle according to a new report.

Penned by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new report suggests that hikers and athletes would be two main markets that the new watch would be aimed at. If Apple does go ahead with the product, Gurman expects a launch to take place either this year or next.

Gurman also notes that this isn’t the first time Apple has considered making the Apple Watch more rugged.

This is at least the second time Apple has mulled a rugged smartwatch. After launching the first version of the Apple Watch in 2015, the company weighed a new model to better appeal to extreme sports athletes. The current version is still popular with runners, hikers, and swimmers, and Apple has added several sports and activity-tracking features via its annual update cycle. However, Casio Computer Co. and other watchmakers have seen strong sales from sturdier product designs with extra protection.

While Apple Watches are already water resistant they do often react badly to being treated roughly. Screens scratch and the casing dents, something that has already led to a large aftermarket collection of cases and whatnot on Amazon.

Apple is likely to announce the Apple Watch Series 7 towards the end of the year. Could it be the first to come with a more rugged option available?
