Apple Is Reportedly On Track To Bring New AI Features To iPhone 16 Thanks To iOS 18

Apple is reportedly readying new AI improvements that will increase the capabilities of the iPhone 16’s Siri digital assistant.

And while those improvements, based on Large Language Model technology, will be available thanks to the 2024 arrival of iOS 18, it’s thought that they will be limited to only the new iPhones.

This news follows a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman last month that claimed Apple was already working on an improved version of Siri for iOS 18, but now leaker @Tech_Reve claims that the iOS 18 improvements will be limited to the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro devices.

This integrated development effort is actively underway, and the first product is expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2024, with plans for it to be standard on the iPhone 16 models and onwards.

Apple is said to be using Large Language Models in a number of ways within its products moving forward, not least an internal tool dubbed AppleGPT by Gurman. It isn’t clear how that technology will be used outside of the company, but improvements to Siri seem like a good bet. Apple already uses AI throughout iOS, especially in the creation of photos, but Siri has so far been limited in its capabilities.

If these new Siri capabilities are indeed going to be limited to the new iPhones we shouldn’t expect them to be unveiled as part of the iOS 18 preview at the WWDC event that is likely to take place in June 2024. Apple won’t want to tip its hat in terms of future phone features nor will beta testers be able to put them through their paces using current devices anyway.
