Following the news that Apple is going to begin supporting RCS messages on the iPhone at some point in 2024, it was wondered whether that would signal the end of green bubbles. But that now doesn’t seem to be the case at all.
Apple’s support of RCS will mean that people using Android phones to communicate with iPhone owners will see messages using that standard rather than fall back to the age-old SMS and MMS options.
That means for some big improvements including full-resolution media transfers, reactions, and more. But anyone hoping for the end of green bubbles is sadly going to be left disappointed.
That’s according to a 9to5Mac report which confirmed the news with Apple.
Apple has confirmed to me that blue bubbles will still be used to represent iMessages, while green bubbles will represent RCS messages. The company uses blue bubbles to denote what it believes is the best and most secure way for iPhone users to communicate, which is iMessage.
Apple clearly wants to ensure that users are well aware of whether they are using iMessage or RCS, with the former supporting end-to-end encryption in a way that the RCS standard doesn’t. It will also allow people to know exactly which messaging service they are using while in the Messages app as is the case today.
Apple hasn’t yet confirmed when RCS support will arrive, simply saying that it will come in 2024.
