You Can Now Use ChatGPT While You Drive Via Apple CarPlay

The OpenAI ChatGPT app has been updated to add support for CarPlay for the first time. The move means that iPhone owners can now use the chatbot as they drive.

Apple first started to allow support for third-party voice-powered apps with the release of iOS 26.4 in March 2026, but developers need to enable the feature on an app-by-app basis.

This new availability comes after OpenAI added support for the feature in its latest app update.

One limitation with the CarPlay implementation of these apps is that they require voice to be the way that people interact with the chatbots. That means that there is no text entry other than via the user’s voice. The apps also don’t show any text for users to read, nor do they show images. All responses are read to the user in a similar way to Siri.

It’s also important to remember that while you can talk to ChatGPT now, the app can’t interact with other apps or your car’s functionality. That’s the case even if your car supports Apple CarPlay Ultra.

If you want to use ChatGPT via CarPlay, make sure that your iPhone is running iOS 26.4 or later and that you have the latest version of the ChatGPT app installed.
