SpaceX has announced its plans to turn Starlink Mobile into a major mobile carrier for customers in the United States.
The move means that it’s possible future iPhones, and indeed Android phones, could run on a Starlink Mobile cellular service rather than those from AT&T, Verizon, and others.

To make this come to fruition, SpaceX has announced two developments, including a new “nationwide low-band spectrum license portfolio.” The company has also received FCC approval for Starlink Mobile’s Gen2 constellation application.
However, it’s the first of those two things that is likely to be an important factor here, and it’s still awaiting final FCC approval. No issues are expected to crop up during that process, however.
While Starlink Mobile’s global 2 GHz mid-band spectrum will provide high-bandwidth capacity in the United States, this new low-band spectrum will provide a coverage layer that ensures Starlink Mobile’s signal penetrates through obstacles, such as walls, and can provide service to customers’ devices even when they are in buildings. Critically, most existing mobile devices already support this underused band.

The FCC has already approved the deployment of 15,000 satellites for a global 2GHz spectrum, with the V2 satellites offering over 100 times the bandwidth of the current generation hardware.
How long all of this takes to come to fruition remains to be seen, but it now seems increasingly likely that Starlink Mobile will be a viable carrier option in the future.
