Spotify Is Reportedly Working On A Competitor To Apple Podcasts Subscriptions

Apple announced a new subscription podcast feature earlier this week that will allow podcasters to earn money directly from listeners. Now, according to a new WSJ report, Spotify is also set to join the market with a competitor.

Apple Podcasts subscriptions will allow people to subscribe to individual podcasts with Apple taking up to 30% of the money off the top.

According to the WSJ report, Spotify’s competitor won’t have any fee associated with it – meaning it won’t take the 20% that Apple plans to take.

Spotify is thought to have an advantage because it’s app is available on more platforms, including Android. However, Apple’s Podcasts subscriptions could also eventually be made available on Android devices, too.

Spotify is already making moves in the world of podcasts and has a number of high profile exclusives to its name. It stands to reason that it could be looking to add a subscription model to help all podcasters make a little more money. Apple, for its part, also has original content based on its Apple TV+ catalog as well.

All eyes will be on both Apple and Spotify, two companies that already don’t see eye-to-eye over App Store restrictions. Now they look set to do battle in the world of podcasts, too.
