TikTok Gets A 75-Day Reprieve As US President Trump Signs Executive Order

If you’re in the United States and a fan of the TikTok video social network you’ve probably had quite a few days. The service was banned over the weekend, but now it’s back, and it’ll stay that way for at least the next 75 days.

Following the swearing-in of returning United States President Donald Trump, TikTok has been given a 75-day reprieve.

Trump has issued an executive order that tells the Department of Justice that it cannot enforce a TikTok ban for the next 75 days. The service’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, will also not be banned in any way, either.

“The unfortunate timing of section 2(a) of the Act — one day before I took office as the 47th President of the United States — interferes with my ability to assess the national security and foreign policy implications of the Act’s prohibitions before they take effect,” the executive order explains. “This timing also interferes with my ability to negotiate a resolution to avoid an abrupt shutdown of the TikTok platform while addressing national security concerns.”

Trump’s order goes on to say, “Accordingly, I am instructing the Attorney General not to take any action to enforce the Act for a period of 75 days from today to allow my Administration an opportunity to determine the appropriate course forward in an orderly way that protects national security while avoiding an abrupt shutdown of a communications platform used by millions of Americans.”

What happens next remains to be seen, but we do know that TikTok will remain available to those in the United States for at least the next two months. Whether it will remain that way afterwards, time will tell.
