Sony has claimed that the next PlayStation will beat the new Xbox to market according to a new report. As if all the rumors amongst fans and the press wasn't enough. Sony itself has now thrown itself into the rumor mill by suggesting that it will beat Microsoft to market with a new, updated home gaming console.
Although there has been much talk with regards to future consoles of Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony has stayed relatively adrift of media coverage.
Being third to market with the PlayStation three behind Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii undoubtedly hurt Sony, at least in the early days. With gamers already having stumped up the money for the Xbox 360 in particular, Sony's expensive option struggled to gain traction for quite some time after its release. A hugely staggered worldwide release did not help, either.
With Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 currently mid-life cycle, and Nintendo's Wii already on its way to being superseded by the company's Wii U, take is already turning to what hardware will power the replacements of this generation's games consoles.
After weeks of turmoil, PlayStation fans can finally rejoice, or at least just a bit, now that Sony's CFO hinted at a next-generation PlayStation console. While we still don't have any further details, at least we know they're working on it, right?
Sony has just pushed a new update for PlayStation 3 users, bumping the version number up to v3.60. This new version adds the ability to boot saved games into the cloud for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Also added is the ability to change the wait time for the system before it senses the inactivity and shuts down DualShock 3 and Sixaxis controllers.
Sony has always been a avid supporter of using top of the line physical storage media for their devices, for instance the PlayStation 2 was the first console with DVD drive, the killer feature of PlayStation 3 has always been the Blu-ray drive and the first-gen PlayStation Portable brought the new UMD media format. But recently, Sony killed UMD format with the PSP-Go in favor of distributing media over their online PlayStation Store. This obviously raised a lot of questions whether Sony will take PSP-Go like route for the next-gen PlayStation 4. Well apparently, this might not be the case after all.
PlayStation 3 has been in the market for quite some time now, and it packs lots of power for both gaming and entertainment purposes. Released back in November 2006, it has since then been one of the most praised consoles in gaming history. There are now talks going on in the wild about Sony already working on the next-gen PlayStation 4 (or PS4). Release date is expected to be somewhere between late 2012 to 2014, and that the development of next-gen games for this console has already begun.
