Oklahama Woman Says An Apple Watch Saved Her 13-Year-Old’s Life

An Oklahoma woman says that her 13-year-old’s life was saved after an Apple Watch alerted them of an abnormally high heart rate. The child was sat in class when the watch noticed that his heart rate was at a very high 190 beats per minute.

A local news outlet explains that the whole thing happened in April of 2018, almost two years ago.

Skylar was sitting in class in April of 2018, when he got an alarming notification on his two-week-old Apple Watch. “I got a text message along with a screenshot of his heart rate that was 190,” said Skylar’s mom Liz. “The following message saying, ‘Mommy, there’s something wrong. I’m not doing anything.’”

After the child’s mother picked them up from school and took him to the hospital, his heart rate went as high as 280 beats per minute. As a result he was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia, or SVT, which is a condition that forces the heart to speed up.

After a seven and half hour operation, Skylar is now on the mend. But his mother says that if it wasn’t for the Apple Watch,  the problem may never have been spotted. As you’d expect, this has led to people buying Apple Watches after they learned of Skylar’s situation.

Now Skylar wears his Apple Watch every day, and his situation has even convinced some others to get one of their own. “My science teacher, which is also my youth leader, she got one because of it,” Skylar said. “It’s going to allow Skylar to participate in all sports, all activity without wires,” Liz said.

This is just the latest case of an Apple Watch helping to save a life, and it likely won’t be the last.
