iOS 18 Tipped For New AI Text Summarization Features And More

Apple has long been rumored to have plans to launch big new AI features for iPhone users later this year as part of the iOS 18 software update.

Now, we’re starting to see more and more leaks about what that will mean, and a new report suggests we can look forward to new text summarization features built into Messages.

The Messages app is one of the most-used iPhone apps in the world and it’s thought that iOS 18 will see AI improve it further. According to an AppleInsider report, the AI will also take into account information from other sources, while the AI will select keywords and phrases to figure out what a message is about.

Upon receiving text input, Apple’s on-device AI selects keywords and phrases within a text, designating them as text topics. Sentences containing explanations, descriptions, definitions, or those which denote varieties of objects are also isolated from the remainder of the text.

The leak continues, saying that information like companies, locations, and more will also be used to add further context to the information the AI presents.

In analyzing texts, the software takes into account all relevant information available. It can recognize and classify entities such as companies, people, and locations. For instance, if a name appears at the top of a text, the software will likely recognize the name as belonging to the text’s author.

If Apple follows the plans we expect it to have, we can expect it to announce the new iOS 18 software at the WWDC event that will take place on June 10. From there, a beta program will run for months before Apple makes iOS 18 available to the public in September.

September will be a big month for Apple with the new software likely to be released shortly before the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, Apple Watch X, and Apple Watch Ultra 3 are released if the rumors turn out to be accurate.
