Change This Now: The Two Instagram Toggles That Protect Your Face From AI

Instagram has integrated its own AI image model into its app, allowing users to take a photo and then use AI to change it. But if you don’t want to allow your photos to be edited, there are two toggles that you can flip to prevent it from happening.

Meta announced the feature, called Muse Image, earlier this week. But as Wired noted, all of your images can be used. Instagram offers over 30 AI-powered effects that can be used on them, and it opts you in by default.

As part of this update, public Instagram profiles are now automatically opted into being fodder for generative AI remixes. All someone has to do is tag your account’s profile in a prompt—if it’s public—and they can use Meta AI to generate an image using your likeness.

Thankfully, it’s easy to avoid this. Open the Instagram app, tap your profile in the bottom-right and then tap the hamburger menu in the top-right. Find the Sharing and Reuse button, then scroll to find the “Allow people to create with and reuse your content” section.

Once there, you can toggle Posts and Reels to the off position, protecting your images from being bastardized by AI.
