It's commonplace for tech companies to mock competitors in ad campaigns, although in the mobile industry, it's usually between arch-rivals Samsung and Apple. The Cupertino company has today bore the brunt of some ribbing from a different source, though, with Amazon's new Kindle Paperwhite ad taking a not-so-subtle pop at Apple's iPad. Since, as we learned just yesterday, the Kindle Fire HDX can more than hold its own against the new iPad Air (read: display is far superior), perhaps Amazon has a little lee-way to sound off, and although this compares the Paperwhite's readability versus the iPad, it does seem as though Amazon is emerging as a real force in tablet circles.

Pebble's Smartwatch is credited with kicking of the current smartwatch boom. Having taken off on crowdfunding site Kickstarter and yielded the backing of over 80,000 interested parties, some of the bigger names in the tech game have rumored to be joining the fray, but while Samsung's Galaxy Gear remains the only fruitful release thus far, the Pebble continues to cement its place as market leader. As part of a significant update to the wearable gadget and its accompanying apps, Pebble has announced some key updates to the corresponding iOS app, as well as support for gesture-based controls.
Call of Duty has come under scrutiny in recent years, with critics quick to point out that each new version is merely a rehash of the previous, and that Infinity Ward / Activision is simply milking what has certainly become something of a cash cow, and the $1 billion made in 24-hours is there to prove it. But now, as YouTube user satantribal has pointed out, there may be a great deal of truth in this claim, since it looks as though the same cut-scene from Modern Warfare 2 has been reused with the all-new Call of Duty: Ghosts. A side-by-side video clip from both titles has been thrown together by the YouTuber that you can check out below, although it'd be a little cruel on some if we didn't throw in a customary spoiler alert.
Although Google spends a great deal of time updating and improving the general functionality of its wide range of products and services, often, the search giant comes through with some nifty customization features. Fairly soon, your Google+ profile will be the subject of deeper integration with your Android smartphone, becoming the profile picture seen by those who call, and so long as you've gone through the process of verifying your phone number in the first place, anybody ringing you will see your Google+ image.
The iPad Air is the hottest topic in the mobile world right now, and since its predecessor, the iPad 4, was rather far from overwhelming, the prospect of a thinner, lighter and altogether more stylish model has certainly been a long time in coming. The tablet has been cost analyzed by none other than IHS Suppli, which has released its estimated component cost of the new and improved iPad Air. In short, it is reckoned that the total component cost is somewhere in the region of $274 for the bare-bones model, which works out at about 13% cheaper than the iPad 3.
Apple's iPad Air is currently being lauded as the best thing since sliced bread, but as DisplayMate's Dr. Raymond Soneira points out, numerous aspects of the just-released slate fall short when compared to Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX. There's no doubt that a new iPad was always going to make a little more noise upon announcement and subsequent release than the retail giant's latest export, but as Soneira's in-depth comparison shows, the Retina panel is noticeably outperformed by that of the new Amazon slate.
The iPad Air just launched a few days ago, and the general consensus is that it is quite simply a cut above any Apple tablet released hitherto. Everything about the design simply oozes class, and although the iPhone 5s definitely still abides by Apple's stylish design motif, it's hard to deny that the iPad Air is a beauty. Ciccarese Design has taken this on board and come through with an iPhone concept created in the image of the all-new iPad Air. Check it out after the leap.
iOS 7 may only have been around for six or so weeks, but already, some are looking ahead towards its eventual successor, iOS 8. There's no doubt that, at least in terms of design, iOS 7 has been the biggest jump in the operating system's lifespan, but like any piece of software, there's still plenty of room for improvement both to looks and general functionality. With this in mind, designer Sangam Bhandari has come up with a rather beautiful concept of iOS 8, and even though we do like the changes Apple and Jony Ive have made with 2013's release, it's hard to pick holes in this elegant, ingenious figment of Bhandari's imagination.
We're now at the eve of what will more than likely be the second-biggest gaming release of this calendar year, and with Call of Duty: Ghosts almost at retail, Activision has released a live-action trailer featuring the lovely Megan Fox. The clip, which runs for almost two minutes, is entitled "Epic Night Out," and you can check it out right after the break!
Neither the App Store nor the Google Play Store are short of a selection of photography apps, and as cameras on smartphones and tablets continue to improve considerably year-by-year, so does the standard of software available to snap-happy owners of said devices. Portrait Lens for Android is one such app, helping you turn those shots of faces into professional-looking masterpieces.
