Amazon Launches ‘Echo Look’ Alexa-Powered Selfie Camera And Style Assistant

Great news hardware fans; Amazon has today introduced a brand new addition to the ever-expanding Echo family, the Amazon Echo Look.

If Amazon’s default Echo is designed to pump out music around the home, give you the latest news digest, and answer some of our most difficult questions, then the brand new Look is a “style assistant” introduced to help you choose that perfect outfit and give an opinion on how you look.

This isn’t actually the first time that we have been able to cast our eyes upon what we now know to be the Echo Look. Leaks back in March suggested that Amazon was in the process of building a security camera, similar to the propositions offered by Nest, Netatmo, and Canary. Given that today’s announced hardware is visually identical to that earlier leak, we now know that what was actually being built was essentially a small and portable intelligent mirror for capturing instant selfies and videos.

This standalone hardware will ship with a cute little base for the camera to be mounted on and placed somewhere of importance in the house – likely somewhere with good lighting and near the wardrobe to make those outfit changes easier and more efficient. There’s also a built-in LED light to ensure that it captures the best possible media when needed, as well as a microphone to make sure that it doesn’t miss a single “Alexa” command, such as “Alexa, take a video.”

The hardware will also work alongside Amazon’s new Style Check tool, designed for Prime members to compare two different pictures and get recommendations on which outfit is better.

This release may instantly appeal to those who want this type of functionality and who love to look good, but there’s clearly a bigger picture in mind for Amazon in making this Echo Look. Like with most Alexa-enabled products, the Look will store information and ultimately start to make clothing and fashion recommendations based on products available on Amazon.

It’s likely that we will see this hardware develop over time, but for now, the Look is being sold by invitation only for $199.99, with Prime subscribers getting priority on the new Echo device.
