Elon Musk, the CEO of xAI, among other things, says that he intends to sue Apple over what he believes is App Store ranking manipulation. He thinks that Apple prefers competitors to xAI’s Grok chatbot software.
Musk, writing on the X social network, claimed that Apple is “playing politics” by preventing Grok and X from taking a spot on the App Store’s list of recommended apps.

“Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,” Musk said on the social network.
“Why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your ‘Must Have’ section when X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps?,” the CEO continued in an X post that is now pinned on his profile.
However, Musk has not provided any evidence that backs up his claims, and there has so far been no lawsuit filed. It remains to be seen whether there will be, or if this was simply Musk’s attempt to put pressure on Apple and its App Store editorial teams.
Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either 𝕏 or Grok in your “Must Have” section when 𝕏 is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps?
Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know. https://t.co/3wenLZGtwG

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a competitor to Grok, is embedded into Apple Intelligence. The ChatGPT app has also previously been listed as one of the top free apps for the iPhone in Apple’s App Store.
