Apple Slashes Price Of MacBook Pro With Retina Display, Updates Processors

If you’ve had an eye on the MacBook Pro with Retina display but have been waiting for Apple to lower its price points a little, then you’ll be pleased to learn that today, the day has come. By means of a press release, the Cupertino has announced a few changes to its revered notebook lineup which also sees both the 13 and 15-inch models ship with faster processors, and the 256GB SSD variant of the 13-inch MacBook Air drop to just $1,499.

The 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro has a new starting price of $1,499, arriving with 128GB of flash storage space, while $1,699 will get you a bumped 2.6 GHz processor and 256GB of flash storage. Meanwhile, the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display has been treated to an improved 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, and if you want to go top-spec on the 15-inch model, you can have yourself an impressive 2.7 GHz quad-core processor and a whopping 16GB of RAM.

The range of the 15-inch model from ‘basic’ right up to full spec is still an almighty $2,199-$2,799, but if you favor the thinner, lighter MacBook Air over all that Retina loveliness, the 13-inch model has also been reduced. Those looking for the tapered-edged notebook with 265GB of flash memory can purchase it brand new and direct from Apple at the cost of $1,399.

These new prices and processor improvements are available immediately, and although the MacBook range – particularly the Retina variant – is still at the higher end of the price bracket when considering the rest of the market, it’s certainly better than nothing for those in the market for a new notebook.

Of course, with this mini-refresh and price adjustment, it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t begin to speculate what Tim Cook’s company plans to do next with its MacBook family. The MacBook Air has been touted for a dash of the Retina treatment for some time now, and although it would seem the natural next step for the notoriously-slim notebook, there has been little indication to suggest this will be the case anytime soon.

Still, for the time being, a price-drop and processor speed increase is always a welcome surprise, and with a 13-inch Retina MBP now costing just $1,499,  now is as good a time as any to grab one from the Apple website.
