Owners of the PlayStation 5 can now use Apple Pay to buy games and in-app content for the first time. The purchases can be made via the PlayStation Store.
The new support adds Apple Pay as an option to the PS5 checkout process, with users required to scan a code using their iPhone or iPad.
Once they scan the code, the payment will be completed via that device. As usual, they can choose which card they want to use and then authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID for security.
In a support document posted to the PlayStation support website, Sony detailed the steps that are required, as well as some troubleshooting steps that can be followed if issues are experienced.
The page also confirms the list of countries where Apple Pay support is now available. It’s an exhaustive list, including United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, the UAE, and a whole lot more.
The only catch of course is that you need to have Apple Pay in your region and have an iPhone or iPad in order for this to work. The Apple Pay support is also only available on the PlayStation 5, so there is no support for PS4 consoles. Sony hasn’t said whether that is likely to change, but we would have expected support to have been there on day one if it was going to be added at all.
