Tesla’s OG Roadster Is Going ‘Fully Open Source’ Including Design And Engineering

The original Tesla Roadster is the EV that started the company on the road to where it is today, and while we’re waiting for the updated model to launch after it was shown off years ago, the original model still has a place in people’s hearts.

Now, Tesla has announced something unexpected — it’s making the car open source.

The company announced the move the same way it announced many things, via post by its CEO Elon Musk on X.

Musk said that the company was making all design and engineering of the Roadster “fully open source” with further explanation available via Tesla itself.

The information provided here is being provided as a courtesy to Roadster enthusiasts and was created during the design phase of the Roadster for research and development. It isn’t manufacturer reference or repair and maintenance material, and may not accurately reflect the actual production models or parts sold. If you use this information, it’s your responsibility to ensure that you follow all laws and safety protocols as we don’t provide any warranties on any work done by non-Tesla personnel whether or not you use the information provided here. You also understand that if you make or design parts or create new repairs or procedures based on this information, we won’t be responsible for them and they won’t be genuine Tesla parts or accessories or Tesla-approved procedures.

This means that companies can now produce parts for a car that hasn’t been sold for a decade and presumably also makes it easier for people to get their Roadster repaired if they need to.

However, Tesla’s text is quick to point out that while it’s open-sourced the project it still won’t be responsible for anything that comes after that.
