OpenAI Wants To Make Its Own AI Phone

OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot, reportedly wants to make its own smartphone to compete with the iPhone and a plethora of Android devices.

According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI is already looking for manufacturing partners that would be capable of building the components that would be used in the phone.

OpenAI is working with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop smartphone processors, with Luxshare as the exclusive system co-design and manufacturing partner. Mass production is expected in 2028…Specifications and suppliers are expected to be finalized by late 2026 or 1Q27.

We shouldn’t expect this OpenAI phone to arrive until well into 2028 at the earliest, given that timeline. And the company’s first device is expected to be a smart speaker similar to the Apple HomePod or Echo Show devices. The speaker would make heavy use of ChatGPT, and have a built-in camera as well as the usual microphones.

If OpenAI really is set to enter the smartphone market, it makes Apple and Google’s own AI efforts more important than ever.

Google’s Gemini already has a strong start on Android devices, but Apple’s in-house AI models are less impressive. The same can be said for Apple Intelligence, the features that surface those models to users. Apple is expected to update Siri using new AI features this year, however.
