Jony Ive and OpenAI’s First Product Could Be Something Entirely New

Following the news that OpenAI has bought Jony Ive’s company, io, a new report has detailed what could be the first product to come out of the new partnership between Ive and Sam Altman.

Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has been keen to work on a product that would allow people to use their phones less and it appears that the device he wants Ive to work on will fit into that narrative.

According to an internal staff call reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, the new product will be a so-called “third-core device” that will be used alongside a phone and a laptop rather than replace either.

The product will be capable of being fully aware of a user’s surroundings and life, will be unobtrusive, able to rest in one’s pocket or on one’s desk, and would be a third core device a person would put on their desk after a MacBook Pro and an iPhone.

Altman told OpenAI staffers that Ive has been able to give him a prototype of the product to test and that he has been using it ever since. “I’ve been able to live with it, and I think it is the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen,” he reportedly said.

It remains to be seen what this mystery product will be, but given the $6.5 billion that OpenAI paid for io, we have to assume the company has big plans for it.
