Apple has today released its first-ever Apple Watch public beta update, bringing watchOS 7 to the public. Those who are registered as public beta testers can now download the configuration profile to their iPhone and get the ball rolling.
Apple has not historically released public betas of watchOS 7 for one main reason – Apple Watches can’t be restored if something goes wrong.
That’s something people running the developer betas have found over the years, with Apple Stores not able to help out, either. Instead, Apple Watches that need to be restored have to be sent to Apple.
Apple is also making that patently clear to those on the public beta program, too.
The watchOS public beta updates are still in development, which means some applications and services may not work as expected, and their data may not be backwards compatible. Apple Watch content backs up automatically to your paired iPhone. You can learn more about Apple Watch backups here. Please note Apple Watch cannot be restored to previously-released OS versions once the public beta is installed.
Those who want to forge ahead anyway will need an Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, or Apple Watch Series 5 to install the new watchOS 7 public beta.
The new update brings with it new workout features as well as a handwashing timer among other things. The addition of the ability to share watch faces is one of the biggest changes. although there is still no support for third-party watch faces, unfortunately.
