Apple’s big WWDC event will take place starting June 9, and it’s expected to announce a raft of new software updates. One of those will be macOS 26, and according to a new report, it’ll be called “Tahoe.”
That’s according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, writing in the weekly Power On newsletter, who believes that Apple will name the new update after Lake Tahoe, partially because it’s where some Apple employees have their second homes located there.
I’m told that the company has homed in on Lake Tahoe as its next moniker, making it macOS Tahoe. It’s a famous resort area and a vacation destination (and second-home site) for many Apple employees.
The new macOS 26 software update is expected to bring with it a new redesign that will befit the change of branding. Instead of incrementing the release number by one each year, Apple is expected to switch to a year-based numbering system similar to that used by the auto industry.
As a result, iOS 19, iPadOS 19, tvOS 19, macOS 15, watchOS 12, and visionOS 2 will all switch to the “26” designation.
Apple is expected to unveil all of the new software updates on June 9 before making initial betas available for developers to download.
Then, after a months-long process, it’s likely the company will release the new updates to the public in or around September. That’s also when we expect that Apple will announce new iPhone and Apple Watch hardware.
