Apple Reportedly Working On New Smart External Displays For Mac

Apple, known for continued innovation, is reportedly working on a new external display for Mac computers with a twist.

According to well-placed Mark Gurman, the new display will function as a smart home device when in idle mode, showing crucial information and adding a layer of functionality and interest for users.

While external displays are not new in the Apple ecosystem, with the XDR and Apple Studio Display being popular choices before being discontinued, this new option integrates smart home technology into the mix. The proposed design aims to maximize the utility of the monitor by providing relevant information, such as weather updates, calendar notifications, and other data when not in use as a connected Mac display.

Interestingly, Apple plans to power the smart features of this display using an iOS device chip, reminiscent of how the Apple Studio Display operated. But with a little additional fizz to make it even more powerful and relevant. This will essentially transform the external display into a smart hub for the home, marking a substantial shift in how external monitors can be utilized.

Simultaneously, Apple is said to be working on additional monitors which are speculated to be potential replacements for the XDR and Apple Studio Display. While details on these are scant at present, the prospect of an upgraded display lineup is exciting news for tech enthusiasts and Apple loyalists. Especially those who are regular Mac users and want to project their work onto a larger display.

The impact of this new venture is twofold. Not only does it enhance the utility of an external display, but it also adds to the growing market of smart home devices. The integration of these two distinct functionalities could signify a new trend in the tech industry. This certainly wouldn’t be the first time that we’ve seen this type of tech in the consumer industry but it’s very interesting that Apple feels that the time is right to get involved.

While the release dates for these new displays are currently unknown, anticipation is building thanks to these latest reports. Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting development from Apple.
